Hi everyone

I hope you are all enjoying the camping this season and making the most of the great weather.  Just a quick question though. I kinda new to caravaning and wondered if i need to un hook the cables from my battery when storing it at home through the week.  I don't have the grey lead to charge my battery when hooked up to car so thought it best to un hook battery when not in use. Any help would be apreciated.

Also i have read that you can buy a conversion kit so i can hook both black and grey cables from caravan into black socket on car. Has anyone heard of this.  (excuse my wording im not very technical)

Hiya,

There's nothing that would prevent you from disconnecting the battery leads when storing it, though many would prefer to hook it up to a trickle-charger so it's ready for your next trip.  That said, disconnecting the leads is certainly a "belt and braces" way of ensuring no charge "leakage" in the van!

With regard to your query about the "splitter", I have heard of these but know little.  I assume they simply split the power correctly from the single black socket to accommodate the grey and black leads from the van.

I think the " conversion kit " you have read about may well be the one which is used to plug the 2 seven pin caravan plugs into a car which is fitted with the European single 13 pin socket.  If so then this obviously would not plug into the 7 pin socket on your car.

We used to have an Eriba caravan which, being continental, had one 13pin plug. so we had a connector that plugged in between the car & caravan splitting it from the 13 pin to standard 12n & 12s leads

There is the opposite connector available so you could tow a standard plugged British van with a foreign car that has the continental 13 pin fitting at its towbar

Hiya'

We have a 110 amp battery on our caravan owing to using the motormover a lot to get it on and off our sloping drive.  As a consiquence I hook up to the mains each time we get home and leave it hooked up until our next trip so that the caravan charger can slowly trickle back what we have used.   Our battery is now coming to the end of its third season with no probs at all.
