after being away for 2 weeks hols first thing i need to ask for advice - the fridge, it packed in on 240 v so we could atleast still run it on gas but can anyone enlighten me to why? it was running great on 240 v and had been for a couple of days, then one morning i noticed that someone had knocked the switch to the gas setting, we just put it back on the 240 v and thought that everything would be ok, it wasnt, it did absolutely nothing!!!! hubby did the usual checks like fuses ect, and couldnt find anything wrong , has anyone got a clue as whats happening or not!
Could be that the heater element coincidently packed up.
This happened to us with a new van once and Electrolux came to the house ti fix it under warranty.
You could pull the fridge out and check the wiring terminals and that 230V is getting to the switch on the fridge if you feel confident and its not under warranty.
Is it the type with no mains warning light?
I fitted a neon warning light from Maplins on ours.
hubby borrowed a tester and 240 v is getting into the fridge and upto the switch but nothing happenning after that. you re right no 240 v light and no its not under warranty, even he said that the next thing was to take the fridge out but as we were away and the gas was working i thought it best that he leave things alone until we are at home!
Hi Tentmad , you should be able to reach the fridge heating element / wiring by removing the top outside fridge vent , one thing you could check before taking the fridge or vent out is to see if it's ( the fridge surrounding area ) getting warm when on 240volts , if it is the element should be ok .
so its looking like the 240 v element is goosed then as the fridge is stone cold and in the wrong places!!! the vents etc are cold when waiting for the 240 to work, never mind at least we can still use it on gas and have now got a spare bottle just in case
dont worry mum its get sorted out dad will probably fix it it might just be a miner fault that hes missed when hes checking it did the people who owned it before us mention any problems with it ,you should try contacting them up about it they might know what to do and like wizard said it could be because of the heat because it does get very hot around there
cheeky monkey!!! mind you she does have a point, the back of the fridge does get very hot it even warms up the sink and cooker! and the heat is coming through into the cupboards around it! great if you want to warm your clothes on it overnight! but it doesnt matter what number you turn the dial to on the fridge its still the same around it! on the outside of the van there is only one vent hole and then the small exhaust pipe cover, could it be that it just isnt getting enough air around it?
>>on the outside of the van there is only one vent hole and then the small exhaust pipe cover, could it be that it just isnt getting enough air around it?
If you only have one vent on the side and the exhaust vent there should be a vent/vents underneth the fridge allowing air to come up through the floor .
There are usually two large grills on the side to let the heat out with Electrolus/Dometic etc on them.
I purchased a fan from Maplins about 6in by 6in and fitted it across the top grill inside so that when its very hot (Spain) it can be switched on to extract the heat.
>>no there is nothing, as the fridge sits over the wheel arch, but there is a tiny little cupboard under it.
there should be some way of air getting in from lower down to allow the hot air from the fridge to come out of the top vent easier . Is there any vents in the cupboard ? maybe they've been cover over .
nope its totally sealed up apart from the top vent just under the window could the fridge have cooked itself? due to not enough ventillation?
Hi Tentmad, I take it the top vent just under the window is on the inside of the van?, if so this is just like our van and the incoming air for the fridge (on ours) comes in via a mesh covered large square hole in the floor under the fridge, I found this out when I removed the fridge to turn it upside down as the gasses had settled out, it works fine now
Don't know about it cooking it's self due to poor ventilation , but it wouldn't be very efficient at cooling the fridge . I've got a feeling that when you had the gas and mains running together this may have done the element in .
when i said that it was gas and mains it was running on 240 but someone had knocked the switch to the 0 setting for the gas but the ingnition hadnt been fired so in therory it was still just working on leccy as no gas was going through, but i agree with your line of thought, nevermind we will just hve to run it on gas in future if it cant be fixed, suppose out of the options i would rather it be left with just gas than just leccy as this would be more restrictive on sites or id be shopping everyday!
