Hi,
I have a Carver caravelle 4 heater fitted to my van. When I switch it on I hear the igniter click and the heater starts to work, but the igniter continues to click intermitently then the heater shuts down and the Green light on the panel starts to flash. The shutdown can happen almost immediatley or after a short period of time.

My questions are
1. What is likely to be happening?

2. Is it something I could fix by adjusting something [if so how] or is it a professional job?

Paul

Have you left the cover on the outside exhaust, ours does that if we forget to remove the cover

No outside cover on this room heater so that won't be the problem.

The Caravelle 4 was a step to far and suffered many electronic problems from the start, not recognising the flame being lit probably the most common.

First the flame must be correct and this you can see through a sight glass by removing the front cover, two small screws at floor level hold it in place. If the flame is blue and dancing gently on each of the four burners during the ten second start cycle then this should be OK. If it's yellow and lazy looking more like a candle flame, then you have found the problem which is the burner needs cleaning. Beyond this is the connections to the control switch or the switch itself. The telephone jack plug used is prone to develop high resistance in it's contacts as are the two sockets to which it connects. Also the earth connection at the fire end is prone to corrosion, a repair is best done with a fresh wire connection to the fire body by piggy backing on to the ignition blocks earth terminal. If this all fails then the fault is on the control switch and I can supply one of these if necessary.

Lastly and nothing to do with the problem but the short steel gas feed pipe to this heater where it comes though the floor is prone to corrode and leak, check it by scraping with a sharp knife and if pitted it should be replaced.

Thanks both,

Gary assuming its the burner that needs cleaning .

1. How do I access it?

2. What should I use to clean it [and how}?

If its electrics might have to get my Brother or Dad over there the sparks lol.

I would have a look first and if blocked burners look like the problem then we can go from there but basically it's spiders webs disturbing the gas/air flow inside the burner tubes that cause the problem.
