Hi,  I have recently aquired a 1991 swift corniche and there is a very small amount of damp around the bottom of the middle window (not soft just slightly wet).  I have pulled back the rubber window seal without removing it and cleaned out all the knackered mastic which just fell off, its all now nice and clean.

Can I just inject some mastic (type used for awning rails) under and the seal (looks like it would be easy) or do I have to remove windows and rubber seal completeley and re-bed with mastic on a roll?  Your tips would be appreciated as I have never done this job before.  Not sure I have time to remove everything this year.

Thanks Pete

Also;

Does anyone know why all the caravans I went to buy (and didnt) were damp, mostly due to awning rail leaks??  Even newer ones I have seen up to 2000 seem to be suffering the same problems.  Just how do the manufacturers get away with such obvious built in design flaws.  There are sealents out there that can and do last over 20 years so there does not appear to be any excuse especailly for awning rails seals which seems to be the most common problem.

I'm thinking of setting up a website to record damp problems and delamination in caravans, maybe if it gets enough attention things might change!

Thanks Pete

I would remove the window and seal, its quite a quick and easy job, that way you know you have it all covered.

And yes your right there are loads of damp caravans about its a shame realy.
you should be able to buy a van and have a ten year warrenty on leaks, like you have said with the sealents we have today there is no excuse.

Flack...

Thanks for Info.  What type/size of mastic would you use, where can you get it from and how do you apply it.  Also when replacing the rubber seal how do you do it without compromising the integrity of the new mastic seal

Thanks Pete
