I asked this question, like many others before, a couple of years ago and was given the same advice, get a nice site off the motorway. I didnt take it and spent a dreadful night in a service station south of Birmingham, what you need to remember is that HGV's operate 24/7 and the tacho/driver hours require them to stop regularly for only a short time, so they rattle into service stations the refridgerated units keep running not the drivers fault, so its as busy at 3 in the morning as it is at 3 in the afternoon.
We now always book into Blackmore CC site at Great Malvern, Gloucestershire about 30mins from M5 and split the journey to Devon. If your travelling from Lanarkshire to Cornwall would be about the same.
