Oh yes it is a good idea. We always do that especially in the warm weather, where we often hook the van up the night before at home (made an extra lead up) so it can be cooling down on mains. Then the food does stay colder.

Yes, that is OK.
But do realize that cooling down without anything in it does hardly help. As soon as warm stuff is puts in that has to cool first, and as there is no cold storage apart from some litres of cold air that drop out of the fridge as soon as you open the door, that would hardly help.
It is at least as effective to put some stuff in it that is frozen already. We normally do that, e.g. nasi goreng, and thus have our meal ready for dinnertime. Just heat it up at that time, usually it still is frozen.
Frozen stuff emits a lot of cold and thus helps cooling the fridge.

I always pre cool the fridge before we go away. In fact what i do is to fill a 1.5litre pop bottle with squash and put it in the freezer at home until frozen then transfer to van fridge this really keeps the van fridge cool when I hook up to the car then transfer over to 12 volts - there have been reports that doing this can cuase the plugs on the car/van hook up to get very warm and in some cases melt - it has never happened to me and I have travelled France. But I am sure that someone here will tell you.

We always cool the fridge down before we set off. That way when we arrive we or rather my wife can have a cup of tea, and me, a nice cold can of BUDDS!  before setting the awning up..

If your car is fitted with twin electrics you can tow with the fridge switched on, but make sure the internal switch is switched to battery and not mains. Also make sure the fridge lock is in position as you dont want the contents all over the interior.

We always put the fridge on at least 24 hours before we go ( on mains) and transfer the perishables from the house fridge the night before we leave.  We always have it on 12v while towing and when we stop for a lunch break we put it on gas.
