Hi!

I'm pretty new to the site and have recently bouight an Elddis Mistral of 199something vintage. It has become readily apparent that the van has damp across the entire front window surround and below. There was damp under the front l/h side window but a 'professional' person has repaired that for us.....at a cost, which brings about my post here on the website.

What materials can be used for doing this job yourself and where can they be bought please? Would 'No More Nails be suitable for sticking the replacement wood to the van? Where would I get replacements for the rubber window seals?

Just a small number of the many I have to ask about 'vanning, my father was always an enthusiast (his Travelmaster Texan was always his favorite) and I think this might be rubbing off on me.

Help!

Hi Gary

Welcome to UKCS

If you go to the Search button and type in damp or repairs and look in the caravan section Im sure you will many previous topics on this problem.

Look for the onesheaded by Wizard he has done some of the most extensive repairs albeit there are many more tackling the problem

Hi Gary

We have just had to redo the whole front window area on our Elddis Mistral 1992.  Pictures of some of the work are on our website which is on the fixed it club list mentioned above.

Thanks for all the replies chaps & chapesses,

one question that no one seems to have broached and which I hope you don't mind me asking, is where can I obtain some of the self adhesive mastik used around windows and under the awning rail? I believe the sizes are 37mm & 42mm.

Cheers all

Hi

We used the non setting mastic in a tube to do ours but you can get the stuff on a roll from a local caravan suppliers.  I don't know if there is anywhere closer to you but I think Waudby's at South Cave do it.

The mastic should be avaible at most caravan dealers , here's the website http://www.w4limited.com/  click on products , look under the heading " Bits and Pieces " and click on sealants , then click on mastic sealing strip .

Thanks Leanne and the Wiz!

The W4 site seems to be just the ticket Wiz man and I've found a large caravan shop out at Torksey between Gainsborough and Lincoln Leanne, that's probably the closest advertised one to us. I think we're going out there tomorrow, we'll let you all know what transpires.

Cheers all and thanks again for answering my questions, though there will be many more!

Hi Gaz, take your time with it and dont let it panic you, once you get the panels off it really isn't that hard.
I'm half way through repairing a freinds caravan at the moment and I think the hardest part of the the job is the redecorating lol.
Try to get some pics going or a website, this way Als and anyone else from the fixed it club can give you oodles of advice.

Ah yes, Paul & Wendy, yours was one of the first I found on this website closely followed by Als superb restoration journal. The more I read, the more I can't wait to get started. I'm certainly getting some of that Fenwicks caravan cleaner stuff from Torksey.

The website may be a bit beyond me at the moment but may I post some photos via email to Al or anyone else if I get into any unforseen trouble please?

Cheers all and thanks again for all the info.

Thanks for the link there Als yours is also on our site as well, we've had a week away in the van now that it's finished it's great. As soon as I can I'm going to have the wheels off for a full service.
