We are about to begin some damp repairs on the back end of our ABI Award Nightstar where the bunk beds are situated.

With regards to the pot rivets on the wooden brackets, are they removed and replaced, or are they removed and then replaced with screws instead?

Cheers, Helen.

Hi Helen, trying to cast my mind back to my ABI

The only rivets I can recall were the joints of the alloy. The panels were fixed by screws. I replaced mine with stainless steal screws having pre drilled then squeezing some non setting mastic in.

Oh        Forgot a huge welcome to the site

Dont be frightened to ask      someone will answer

All the best

Hi Helen , have a look at my webpage and the links on it for info on damp repairs http://hp-h.com/p/wizard41/
On my caravan it had metal seating brackets held on to the panelling with pop rivets , the panelling was damp so they had to be removed ( i drilled the heads off the pop rivets so i could get the bracket off and remove the damp wood ) ( it's a good idea to measure the distances to the brackets so they are easier to put back ) when i had removed the wood i found that the pop rivets actually went into a steel plate which was stuck to the polysterene ( note becareful you don't accidently throw the plates away ie it could be stuck on the back of your damp wood ) ( also mark where the plate locates on the wall ) .
When you replace the brackets you may need to re-drill into the plate to refix the brackets in the correct place ( becareful not to drill right through the caravan wall ) .

As to sealant you do need to use a sealant that's designed for caravan repairs , you can by these from most caravan shops . If you use non caravan sealants you could end up doing the whole repair all over again in a few months .

Hope this helps , any more questions ask away , The Fixed it Club will be here to advise you .
