I am looking for some help with fitting a filter housing to my caravan, I have a crack in the one currently fitted.
How easy are these to fit?
What sealant should I use?
Any other help or tips would be greatly appreciated
I have never fitted a filter housing but after you remove it from the van you need to remove the remaining mastic from the caravan by using white spirits and a cloth
you need some of the W4 caravan mastic on a roll, normally available from your local caravan dealers and carefully stick this to the lip on the housing where it will contact the caravan body, trim off any overlapping mastic, pull off the white protective tape from the mastic then offer it up to the aperture and bobs your uncle, a little tip when refitting the screws is to wet the tips in your mouth as this helps the screw go cleanly through the mastic
Did this on my old van. The hardest part was reconnecting the electric wires the manufacture of the van must have done it before the seats were put in, I had to extend the wires by 2inch.
------------- I do the towing so it must be my turn to wash the van and clean the inside!!!
Did this on my old ABI, Had to hunt around breakers to get another, couldnt get a one so had to fit a new one , dont despare though they do a plate that fits around the new one to fil the large hole.
I used the mastic on a roll then finished it off with a tube of siliflex to make sure it was water tight.

are you saying that the new Carver crystal filter housings are smaller than the original (I have a 1991 van)?. I was going to order a replacement, but I'd hate to get it all the way down here to find that it's too small for the hole in the van and have to try to source one of these plates afterwards. (Plus, if I order them together, the postahe would be cheaper, and that's a big concern when postage is often more than the price of the item being mailed, e.g. just ordered a shower bracket cost 2.20, postage 4.00)
Carver changed from the mk1 Crystal filter to the mk2 in the early 90's, the difference is easy. With the mk1 the pump lives behind a little flap in a (dirty) blue box, while the mk2 has a bigger flap and the pump is removable for storage. To complicate matters a little, since Truma took over the 'Carver Crystal 2' became just the 'Truma Crystal', nevertheless they are still identical
If indeed you have the old mk1 then to change over you need; the new housing, an adaptor plate to fill the old hole and a plug to modify your pump lead and make it removable.
Some dealers do not stock the pump plug, instead insisting you need a complete pump at £35 ouch..so be wary unless your old pump is on it's last legs.
Changing over is very straight forward but a useful tip is this: If you are using a Jubilee clip to secure the internal pipe?, then push the pipe and clip fully on the stem close to the housing. The reason is there is a non-return valve in the end of the stem which won't work correctly if the Jubilee clip distorts the roundness of the stem.
You have cracked your old housing though, I would then guess you already have the later filter? so most of the above will not be relevant. To stop the new one cracking always use a little 'Silicone grease' on the seal and threads or if nothing else use cooking oil. NEVER use Vaseline!!
I have another probably silly question on filter housings and maybe if Gary from Arc reads this he can answer it for me. I have been looking at ordering a new housing etc. over the internet and note that the ones on sale (not just doors as they are available in the older style) have a rounded door/flap, and look slightly different to the older Mk2 (prepared to admit that this difference might be my imagination, as you tend to forget a bit between running down to the van and back to the computer). Are the newer curved style ones a direct replacement for the older flat doored ones, hole positions etc? I must admit that the door on these newer ones looks a lot more robust than the one on my (flat doored)filter
I think you are looking at a mk3 which had a short life as Carver soon reverted back to the mk2. The door of this type has a rounded middle much like a 'power bulge' in a car bonnet!! They are a direct replacement size wise for a mk2 but take a different filter and plug for the pump both of which cause trouble. There are plenty of these on Ebay at the moment but I would not recommend getting one as they are as obsolete as the mk1 and as said cause problems in use.
If you have any trouble getting a mk1 to mk2 conversion kit then I sell them.
Hi Gary, thanks for the reply, but if you look at this page: Leisurediredt
You will see what I mean. The filter I have has a cover like the one at the bottom which they call the "older type" and the rounded ones are the ones above that which they just call the Mk2.
The manual I have that came with the caravan calls mine the Mk2 and it has the filter. It also has the socket for the "remveable" pump, and not a permanently connected pump as you say the Mk1 had.
Am I labouring under the misapprehension that mine is a Mk 2 when it's not?
If it is, I'm still asking the same question, are the newer and older types a direct replacement for each other?
Thank you Gary, you're a gem. I'd chosen the colour before I even got round to wondering whether it would fit.
I can go ahead and try to order one now. My next problem is getting hold of the mastic tape, but that's another story.
where did you get it from drhowell, so far I've had either no reply, or replies stating that they don't ship outside the UK. Don't suppose you fancy putting a length of that mastic in an envelope and posting it over do you? LOL
Just kidding. Yes, I am just kidding.
This is the company details you could try contacting them to see if they can help

Hi
actually I was talking about the filter housing drhowett, I'm sure I can find something similar to the mastic here, it's getting the housing that is the problem.
