Good news on this post!
I took the pump apart, moved the 'u' pcking back into position and rescrewed everything as tightly as I could. At first it seemed to continue leaking - and so I left this post.
When we next went away, I cut a hole in the side of an ice cream box so that the pump and its pipe would sit in it. I was expecting more water and this seemed the bext way of containing it. I also placed a bag of silica gel in the cupboard to keep the atmosphere dry.
Guess what - no more leaks!
I'll leave the ice cream tub just in case though......!
