Hi there,
It does sound like an earth problem somewhere yes, but tracking it down may not be so easy....If it were me i would start with the grey cable connector on the tow hitch, quite often these can fill with water and corrode inside causing allsorts of problems, If that looks fine then i'd move to the towbar electrics paying special attention to the earth wires. If your cars light's, indicators etc all work fine without being hitched up to a caravan then i'd say the problem must lie with the above and not the car itself.
