Hi Everyone,

I've had the second (grey) socket fitted to my tow hitch because i thought i would be able to chill down my fridge on the journey and also charge my leisure battery. But when speaking to my dealer because i couldn't seem to get the battery charging they told me it won't bring the fridge down to temp it will only hold it at the temp it already was at and that i needed to chill it down first off a 240v. As it's in a storage compound this ain't possible! They also confused me around the position of the electric switches in the van saying they should be set to van and not car!!

Help!

Have i just paid out to have a reversing light?....and only one of those at that!!!!!!!

Unfortunately he is right about the fridge, it will only help it tick over.

Again with the battery, it will not fully charge it justgive it a minor trickle charge.

Bemused about the switch position though.

If I store anything in fridge whilst travelling I put in a 2litre bottle of frozen water to help with the chilling.

Have you read about the 3 position switch in your handbooK? It is not the same for all vans.  But as ethel610 has just said the car position is only for emergency use of car battery.  Our dealer also suggested we keep it in the van position and we do, and it all works fine.  Your van is from swift group same as ours so quite likely has similar equipment.   Our handbook does say to use the middle position, something to do with isolating the 12v while travelling, but the habitation relay does that anyway.  Keeping it in van position means one less thing to remember!!!

You could chill the fridge on gas.

The switch makes no difference to the fridge on tow as its wired direct from the car charging system via a relay and the 12S plug.

The car position is really only for use on site when the van battery has gone flat and is a left over from the days when batteries were not fitted to caravans.

 I'll speak to the dealer again about the 3 way switch because someone else told me to put it in the van position.

Could you not pre-cool your fridge using gas whilst in storage??? the when travelling it should maintain temperature
