As i keep my caravan in storage away from home I have to drain down all the water systems at this time of year incase of any quick sub zero temperatures. I plan to use the van once a month during the winter so I have removed the Crystal filter that is fitted to the water inlet with a view to replacing it each time we use it (i.e. the same filter not a new one for each trip). Is this what other people tend to do? or should I be doing something else, if you do take the filter out how/where do you store it for its next use?

If its the mark 3 filter I would remove it as they are known to crack/leak anyway.

If its the earlier round one you can use an old filter screw end as a dust cap if taking the filter off.

I would be inclined to remove the filter as sods law will guarantee a problem if you've thought about in and done nowt !!

Remove filter when van not in use, and freezing temperatures likely.  If the filter element is very wet when it freezes, it will possibly crack both its immediate body and, very expensive, the main outer casing which is fitted into van wall.  Wrap filter in cling film and store in house fridge (not freezer compartment) until next use.

I don't replace filter more than twice a year.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The filter I would imagine is the latest type as the caravan is only 6 months old (Elddis Crusader Super Cyclone). At the moment I have just got the screw in cap end pluging the hole removed from the end of the old filter and I have got a brand new filter to replace it with when we next use the van. I would rather remove the filter each time during winter and not take the chance of the casing cracking on the caravan.

I think that the mark 3 was replaced by the old mark2 !!

There were so many faulty ones

I replaced mine as soon as I got the van

The first time I visited the dealer after purchasing the van I overheard a conversation about "problems"

In the hot summer, in the good old days when we had a caravan, it belatedly occurred to me that I knew nothing about these filters.  On checking the handbook found that we should have changed it the month before! Horrors, it was bright green with algal growth.  Couldn't get it out and didn't have the special removal tool. Caravan went back anyway, so didn't worry.  But if you are wrapping them in cling film and they're still damp, I think I would be concerned about what's growing inside them. But it would never have occurred to me of the need to remove it during winter. Thanks folks.
