I have always drunk the campsite water while tenting with no problems but I usually run some water to waste before filling my container (a large flask in my case) or go to the tap just after someone else has filled a container. That way, at least the water coming through the pipe is fresh. I also refresh my water at least once a day if not more.

Even in my caravan I won't be filling the container and having it stand around in the sun...just enough for a day, and change it regularly, and as I said, use a seperate container for drinking...I have a thing about buying water in a bottle - lol - almost as much a con as buying a tin of fresh air!

Do you need to change the filter at the same time with these methods?

Thanks

Hi Michael

I've just bought a Ranger 510/4.  This is a very intersting thread, where are the filters on a ranger.

I flushed out the system with purisol when we bought the caravan last year and put a new filter in and we all drank the water from the tap.

No one had a problem and it tasted fine, i will be flushing the system again before the first trip this year, Bob i have never bought bottled water in this country i feel the same as you

Marc

My wife brings sterilising tablets from work - a Maternity ward, so if it's good enough for babies it's good enough for us (it's not Milton's tho).

A good soak and flush through every spring. But then we only drink it in tea or coffee, boiled first.

We always buy oldish caravans, currently 1989, and I always renew all the water pipes just in case. Our current one, the PO said he'd never used the water, just bottles. I could see why when I saw the black stuff growing inside the pipes I removed. :-(

We have on board tanks, usually once or twice a year we sling in a couple of caps of milton. run it through for a while and we have never had any bugs.

We dont drink it as a rule, but clean our teeth and stuff. usually have some diet coke and a bottle of water. we dont really tap water at home much.

never noticed the taste of milton, you can smell it but it is safe to drink. they use it in the army sometimes to disinfect running stream water. I think 70c is enough to kill most bugs, and dont forget when you are washing up - the detergent kills a lot of bugs - as an extra measure get some anti-bacterial washing up liquid.

I must admit whilst tenting I have filled a bottle up from the stand pipe. most drinking water in this country is more than safe and well above recommended levels I hear. like bob, i always let water run for a bit first (i can hear the conservationists sigh..)

if replacing pipes, you can buy 'food standard' water pipes, they are apparently better quality and more germ resistant - dont know how though..
