I always peg the draught/mud flaps inside and then place the groundsheet over them.
that's pretty well what i did at the back of the tent, as per your original instructions and that worked well. Thank you. If you hadn't told me i would have thought they were meant to go outside because of the way the eyelets are placed, in the corners.
We had the canopy door open a lot of the time.. with and without mesh. It was on a slight slope going down so i pegged the groundsheet over the webbing strip and that was fine too.
We used the J door when it was raining and i was a bit less sure about how to deal with that and so water did get in. It was a minor irritation that there was velcro at the top and bottom but not in the middle so it stuck when i was in a hurry to shut the door but was useless for sticking the door shut! And why no mesh on that door?? Some ventilation on that side would have been good.
it didn't help that the ground was quite uneven just there. I'll see if i can get a picture up so you can tell me where i went wrong :)
it also struck us that there was an eclectic mix of fastenings.. as if they thought they would give everything a try!
Despite a few minor qproblems i will have nothing said against my tent! The only other one on the site that i was a tad jealous of was a coleman with a skylight! how cool is that! However, after discussion with the owner and watching him taking it down, i realised it was too much like hard work to own one of those.

Hi again, 'Sonja.P'...
It certainly looks like you had a pretty 'bald' and uneven pitch there!... I hope you wont mind, if I make a few 'comments' based on your pictures.
Firstly, I wouldn't leave the canopy up at night, when you're out & about and most importantly, when it's raining!. As you've found they collect water, which can stretch the seams and leave you with leaks...
Secondly, use all of the guylines, particularly the ones around the 'dome' edge, as it will 'spread the load' better... Your main 'tri guys' (the ones which come off the main poles) look very tight and at a 'shallow angle' to the tent. Next time, perhaps you could 'slide' the tensioners up higher and peg the 'tri-guys' at about 45 degrees and closer to the tent. Also, the triguys have an elasticated tension band, attached to the 'pegging point' which shouldn't be fully stretched; leave some slack, to allow for movement... Your 'tri-guys' coming from the 'bedroom pod' look to be pegged 'upwards', were they tied to a tree!. Always peg them down, more or less in line with the long side of your tent. This will keep the vent open (but watertight!) and prevent condensation in your tent and the 'pod' will have a better shape and hold the shape of the inner tent much better. On the same point, unzip and peg out the window and ventilation 'gusset' on the opposite side to the 'J door' this again will prevent condensation.
As for leakage, to be honest, I think your problems are more likely to have been caused by condensation, due to the lack of ventilation, as I mentioned above.
Lastly, did you 'peg down' the base of your inner tent?. There are two 'clips' at the back corners, which attach to rings in the bottom corner of the main tent and two pegging points, which should be pegged to the ground, at the front (the 'footprint' groundsheet has two small slits to allow for this). The inner tent will 'hang' much better and keep it's shape, if you do this...
So, really it's just a case of using all the guy-lines and positioning them correctly and not too tight!... Keep all the vents open and they'll prevent the condensation. Try to get a 'flatter' pitch, so you can peg the draught/mud flaps down properly. Get a 'footprint' groundsheet which will fit securely over the 'flaps' to prevent draughts and rain (and slugs!) getting in and allow you to peg down the inner tent properly...
I hope you don't mind me making the above points, they're not meant as criticism, just to help you... I hope you enjoy your next camping trip... Andy...

thanks for your comments andy :)
No, the triguy wasn't tied to a tree .. i took the picture as my husband was taking the tent down but i didn't think we had the guys right and i wanted some advice about that.
I realise it looks as if we left the canopy open while we went out but actually we were sitting under it for shelter from what we thought was going to be a light shower then suddenly there was so much rain in such a short space of time that we had to take it down! but i took a picture first. After that we put up our umbrella!
As for leakage, to be honest, I think your problems are more likely to have been caused by condensation, due to the lack of ventilation, as I mentioned above.
as you will see from the orange dates on my pics (please note webhex if you are reading this ) it all happened in the early afternoon when the canopy was wide open (so plenty of ventilation) but it rained a couple of inches in a minute, judging by the amount of water that collected, so i think it was just sheer volume that did it. It rained again in the night but we didn't have any more leaks from the roof.
the inner tent was fixed at the back but not at the front (not wanting to make holes in my groundsheet) It hung ok .. i was pulling it back to take the pictures so it may look a bit odd!. However the D rings were a bit of a struggle and the mattress held it pretty well in place so do they really need to be used!? Next time i will put a bit of non slip stuff under the mattress, like i do to the futon at home, to stop it sliding forward if we are on a bit of a slope, which we will be when we do a festival next july!
we had a lot of choice for where to pitch our tent as we arrived midweek and i think we had about the best pitch going, for the site. At the weekend or in the season you would have to squeeze in where you could!
keeping just about on topic... if you have another look at the pics you will see that a sig is no use if you are attacked by horses.

The ponies in the mist look fab. Have just noticed the ones of the pony wrecking someone's tent - not so fab!

Hi all,
In 1996 I enjoyed the big green gathering in wiltshire in a no SIG tentit got infested with arrrgh EARWIGS kept kicking them out they kept coming back in - convinced they were going to get into my ears, I wore a hat pulled down over my ears every night.
When I got home all was well until a month or two later when I decided to wear my denim jacket out of the cupboard to go out in - I hadnt worn it since the gathering.
While I was out someone asked me for a light so I put my hand in my top pocket and sharp pain!! an earwig embedded pointy end first - live and wiggling in my knuckle so I pulled the thing out and burnt it in an ashtray because it had hurt me!
I do like wildlife but not sticking out of my hand!
I prefer the SIG
lol Maz

We like the cosyness of our SIG, also the dog can't get out underneath like he
has previously, Don't like to keep him tied up in all the time.

Last august we purchased a Sunncamp vario 5, with the sewn in ground sheet, this was great the first time we used it at Ullswater C & C site as it rained lot. Our previous 3 tents from Vango to cheap tents never had this and with the wind and rain, we wont be going back to no SIG

I am amazed that no-one has mentioned the harm that SIGs do to the grass.
In these days when people are worried about looking after the environment, I would have thought that campers would have been at the forefront of the discussions. After all we choose to have our holidays out of doors. When you look at how the manufacturers market their tents, it is all about healthy outdoors lifestyles etc.
We have a breathable groundsheet and it can be miserable to camp on a pitch that has been turned into a mudbath by the SIG of the previous campers. Our tent came with a traditional peg-out groundsheet which we use for monsoons.
The rain/wet thing is mainly down to how you pitch the tent. We were in E Germany last summer where there were floods. We stayed perfectly dry even after 8 days and night of continuous rain. At the other extreme, when it is baking hot, there is nothing better than the feeling of cool grass under your feet.
Anyone else agree about the environment thing?

No.... :)
THAT is going much much too far for me....
Grass grows, get eaten, trodden on, whatever, dies, regrows.... its grass's function in life....
A free tip.... if you find that you often end up on boggy pitches... get a tent with a SIG! Worth their weight in gold!! :)

I've never been to a 'commercial' campsite, where the pitches are layed out and you have no choice but to pitch on a patch of bare mud, so I don't really come across the problem that much...
I know a couple of owners, of very small small campsites in Norfolk; one has banned S.I.G. tents for stays of longer than 7 days. The other won't take S.I.G. tents at all and if you use a 'plastic' groundsheet, it must be rolled back twice a week, to allow the grass to 'breathe'... They both tell you this, before booking, but neither site seemed to suffer from a lack of 'customers'. Last Summer (the first year of the new 'rules') and the fields definitely looked better for it (no bald, muddy rectangles scattered about)...
