I've been a camper for about 5 years now but have to admit that I've only actually been 5 times in those 5 years.

Anyway, my 2 previous tents haven't had SIG and last June, we were on holiday in Newquay and we were woken in the morning by ducklings coming in our tent and pooing on our groundsheet!!!

We both really want a tent with SIG now hence my posts about the Diablo 600. We've been to see one erected in Go Outdoors and although it's in a false environment, the feel of it was cosy and you didn't have those gaps going around the edge.

I can't wait to buy my Diablo and get camping!

when i got the khyam xl, with sig for the bedroom only, i assumed it would be grass underfoot in the living area. The only camping i had done before we bought it was in a grassy field.

We tried it out in Hollands Wood in the new forest and, although i still stick by my decision not have sig throughout, we had to put a tarpulin down in the living area after all. There were no designated pitches but any area that was suitably flat to pitch a tent was totally bald . I don't know how much that is attributable to tents with sigs.

In fact it would have been a nightmare trying to keep the mud out of a tent with a sig! That's one of the reasons why i have bought an annexe, so we don't have to step out into mud!

All our tents have been sig only in the bedroom and an open weave ground sheet in the living area. We find this the best option as the bedroom is kept clean whilst all spills and dirt in the living area just soak away through the floor. Yes you get bugs in the living area but you dont sleep there and you are after all in a tent which is impossible to keep completely sealed. To maintain a dry and clean floor in a tent with a sig in the living area must be very hard work especialy in wet weather. Everyone has their own preferences but for us sig bedrooms only give the best camping environment.

We had a mouse in France that raided the meusli. Ended up leaving out a couple of bits of pasta, and bought a big plastic box with a click on lid for the food. Used to lie in bed listening to it trying to get the lid off. Wildlife is part of the charm/fun. Closing the doors keeps out most of the beasties.

Worse problem is wasps - I hate them, wife goes into anaphalectic(?) shock.  They ruin eating outside, especially breakfast. Any suggestions? - or is this a different thread.

had disaster one year with small lake inside our tent( I know this was a bad year for us in terms of pitch and rain....but...) after this we decided the only way forward was a SIG!! It was definately the right move and I wouldn't camp wothout  one now- big southern jessy that I am!

Grass grows, get eaten, trodden on, whatever, dies, regrows.... its grass's function in life....

A free tip.... if you find that you often end up on boggy pitches... get a tent with a SIG! Worth their weight in gold!!   :)

         i'm new to the site. Got a outwell montana 12 had it for 3 years had some brilliant hols and weekends away so much so my kids have also purchased a montana 12 and a montana 6 [look great all pitched together] not had any problems at all. so glad we chose a S.I.G cos we got young babies and can ensure its draught free

I'm a bit new to all this and will soon be purchasing a new tent see other thread.

I understand that SIG stands for Sewn in groundsheet but are you talking about the outer skin of the tent (So the family or management area has a sealed gound sheet) or sleeping compartments??

What are the major features of SIG and No SIG?

Hi Ian and welcome to the club Well you know what a SIG is.Its a matter of personal choice at the end of the day.I have tried both and would not be without my SIG. Mine for instance runs throughout the tent.

Advantages-no draughts and no creepy crawlies,no water in the tent if it rains.   

Disadvantages-none that I can think of.

I also have a day tent which is supplied with a detachable groundsheet,so it can be used or not.Since it is my cooking area I don't use it,.well it depends on the weather of course!!       

What about pitching?

The only tents i have evern had you put the outer up first which obviously has no SIG and then hang the inner bits in which do have a SIG but this is just the sleeping compartment! the family area has always been grass unless i put somehting down myself.

If you have a total SIG even in the family area how does this affect pitching?

Sorry to ask so many questions, just trying to get my head around it all.
