We decided on SIG so our 3 year old doesn't escape in the night but I can see the advantages of both

We have a sig on our diablo 600, and a non sig on our campus indiana 8. I love both of them, but have to say I prefer the campus. Even on breezy nights, I can still leave the bedroom zips undone as it is nice and cosy, but in the diablo it can get too warm even with all doors open, if there is no breeze or one in the wrong direction.

It is a shame with the diablo, that the weather it is most suited to being used in, is weather I wouldn't want to take it in, due to being inner tent first, and sig. I have now got a new tent ( a lovely gelert cotton tunnel tent ) with a zig which will hopefully give me the best of both worlds. Will be camping in it next weekend in north Wales, so will soon find out.

Posted something on this sig and ive only just saw this thread, that will teach me to jump and ask before reading.

I must say i quite like the Coleman Weathermaster.Looks like a large living area plus its sewn it too.We have a sunncamp XL with the bedrooms sig but not the living area.I hated all the creepies and when we decided to stay in at night and play cards we was so cold due to the draft.Plus this year we have a dog so i dont want her running out under lol.

If anyone can send me links of other tents 2 or 3 bed with sig id be very gratefull.

Thankyou, Vicky xxx

The whole debate about bugs is nothing more than a placebo effect, everyone who goes camping knows the insects come in your tent when your door is open during the day. Unless the idea of a SIG tent is to keep it shut at all times.

if you have a full sig tent.. are the bedrooms seperately sigged and self enclosed ??  Not that i am going to change because i  my khyam classic XL in which the bedroom pod does have a sig and mesh doors, that i always shut behind me, for an insect and slug free zone.

Yes, they are, but not necessarily with a waterproof groundsheet (not required, due to the SIG in the entire tent).

What does anyone reckon the the new Khyam (2008) SIGs? They are not polyethylene, as with many other manufacturers, but polyester, like the tent. I can understand this is to facilitate easy folding, since it needs to be quite light and flexible to be folded with the tent, especially as the frame stays affixed.

However, we have a dog, and I suspect her claws would potentially damage this fabric more than a polyethylene one, making a carpet obligatory for protection. Then, I reckon it is likely to get more stinky than a polyethylene one (I'm thinking wet dog here, plus spillages etc) and potentially harder to clean. What do others think?

The other thing about sig is that when it's windy in the night you know you are helping keep the tent on the ground laying in bed

I have three tents myself, all of which have sig bedroom / sleeping conpartments, the rest of the tent is not sig, it doesn't bother me too much about the crawlers which invade my time off away, I also think a sig would be dangerous for me cos when im drunk im liable to fall over the sig and injure myself...... I like the idea of having a breeze passing through my tents on hot days, isnt camping all about being in the wild and living in the wild or is it ment to be a home from home? if a tent is put up correctly it shouldn't really matter if you have a sig or not or does it?

My first 2 tents didn't have a SIG, but the first one had a built in mudwall.

The first wasn't too bad, but the second because it didn't have either built in mudwall or SIG was a little cold, but nothing I couldn't cope with.

The new one I am getting has a SIG, and I chose this purely because hopefully it's a little warmer, and also, it offers good pretection from the rain, which can get pretty heavy in Norfolk.

We've just purchased the 2008 Outwell Vermont XL, SIG, windows open, pitch in one.

So all in all: easy to put up, no nasty insects, lush optional extra carpet in inner living area, bath tub style ground sheet for outer living area (kitchen / eating), warm & cosy on those cold nights & plenty of ventilation.

After weeks of researching tents I think we hit the jack pot too as we only paid £399.14 for it (RRP £629.99)

I wouldn't camp in a tent without a sig, all those insects, leaks, wind etc no thank you. Even if you can fit it perfectly so it doesn't leak, why bother - just buy a tent with a sig, saves all the hassle. :)

Last year we bought a Montana 6 and one of the things I don't like about it (there's quite a list) is the SIG. The basic problem is that in bad weather (and living in the UK we do get that from time to time) water can get into the tent (e.g. when opening doors, or in our case when the horizontal rain found it's own way in), when this happens the water is free to pool at the lowest point. If the lowest point is under the bedrooms, then the water soaks into the floor of the bedroom, because they don't come with a SIG. I'm now utterly convinced that SIGs are important for the bedrooms and that a separate groundsheet for the rest of the tent makes it a lot easier to sort out spillages, water ingress and other mess.

The bedrooms in the orchy 500 have groundsheets and mudwalls on them, so if that happened it wouldn't be too much of a problem, never thought about the water having no where to go though.  Although never had water get in...I have 2 cheap squares at the door for standing on when you come in, so hopefully that would help stop it.

i'll second that :)

interesting to read about the new khyams.

i am hoping we will be ok for a bit with ours but was concerned that if we did need to replace it we would be talking about a different beast altogether. Seems i was right. :(

but anyway, next time i am going for the new quechua :)   No groundshhet in the 'day room' but a sig in the bedroom tent (so not off topic at all!)  :)
