Hi Bedgar,

I have now spoken to the spoken to the CC Club - their responses are as follows:

Dear Luke

Thank you for your enquiry.

The Camping and Caravanning Club welcomes campers in all types of unit to its Sites, and strives to accommodate as many units as possible.  However, whilst we do advise campers that there is no maximum unit size on Club Sites, the varied nature of Sites across our 96 Site network means campers may experience difficulties in finding single pitches large enough to safely accommodate units if they exceed either 8 metres (26ft) in length, or 5 metres (15ft) in width.

Campers with units that exceed these dimensions are asked to contact Sites directly in order to make bookings.  Whilst some of our larger Sites are equipped with single pitches capable of accommodating larger units, other Sites may only be able to safely accommodate such a unit subject to there being additional pitching space available.  If additional pitching space is used on any Club Site, an additional fee is payable for its use, (typically £5.40 per night).

Tunnel tents are the most easiest tent to accommodate on all our UK Club Sites.

I trust the above information will be of some assistance to you.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us with your enquiry and we hope that we can welcome you to our network of Club Sites in the near future.

With regards to Forest Holidays their response was:

Dear Luke

Following my recent e-mail I have now received clarification from Forest Holidays regarding their policies with relation to pitch sizes.

Size is approx 6 x 5 metres, but as they do not mark out pitches this is a guide, they say up to a 6 man tent with up to 6 persons, any bigger than 6 man requires you to book 2 pitches.

Their policies are very different to CCC ones. Ie no credit account, cancellation of a pitch £30 up to 3 days before arrival, no refund after that.

If you have any further queries with regards to Forest Holidays please feel free to e-mail them at info at forestholidays.co.uk.

I hope this clarifies your original query, Kind Regards

So it would seem that as far as C&C Club sites are concerned the only criteria is the units footprint - as long as it is whithin 8x5 m's you should have no problems - if you do you should refer the site back the above contacts at the club.

The situation with Forset Holidays is different. If units over 6X5m pitch and/or with a capacity of over 6 people then the site can charge for two pitches. As daft as this seems this appears to be their rules (although they can't use the excuse that they are just following C&C Club policy!).

Now that I have Forest Holiday's email address I might start badgering them to explain their size policy ( - if enough tent owners complain they may well change their stance).

In the meantime, I guess that the moral of the story is that if you have an average sized family tent (and I wouldn't consider a SV8 to be anything more than average sized) you either avoid Forest Holiday's sites altogether or you don't mention it's size and hope that no one checks when you pitch it.

Not ideal!

Hi Bedgar,

Not sure if you have given up on this thread or not but I have some more info for you!

I had a look at Forest Holidays website yesterday and noticed that all mention to the maximum number of berths per tent has been removed. The only criteria was that units should be less than 8'm's long (no problem for SV8 owners like me). I then spoke to the Forest Holidays call centre to ask them if there had been a change in policy - apparently not - according to the cutomer service advisor they still take the maximum berth as an indicator of tent size and will charge for two pitches if you can fit more than 6 people in your tent (I tried to argue the logic of this with the advisor but, predictabley, did not get very far!).

Not to be defeated, I then emailed Forest Holiday's direct with my query as follows:

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly - very impressed!

Just to clarify: My tent is well under 8 m's in length and there will be 2 adults and 1 infant staying in it.

My only concern is that although the manufacturer states that it is designed to sleep 6 in comfort it is technically an 8 berth tent (I think that the maximum number of berths is a bit of a red herring really - the size of the tent does not always bear much relation to the number of people that the manufacturer says can theoretically sleep in it).

Is this OK for a single pitch?

Thanks again!

Luke

and their response as follows:

Hi Luke

Have just checked with my Manager and she has confirmed that the pitch is 8m by 5m, as long as your tent and car do not encroach on an area larger than this it will be ok to book a single pitch - if you call to make your booking just tell the operator that it is a 6 berth tent.

Thanks

Wendy

I guess this tells us two things - firstly that Forest Holidays don'y really know what thier policy is with regards to tent size, but more importantly if you have a SV8 you now have official sanction from Forest Holidays to refer to it as a 6 birth and not an 8.

A result of sorts!

Well done Luke for pursuing this. I have an SV8 and have stayed at 2 Forest Holiday sites. I've always booked on the internet and have therefore never been asked the size of my tent. Neither have the wardens on site queried it either. I would never stay there if I was charged for 2 pitches
