I have just had a conversation with  C.& C.C. (Camping & Caravan Club) the c&CC and they have a rule that anyone with a tent capable of holding more than 6 people should pay for 2 pitches - it is this rule that is now being applied in the forestry commission sites beacsue they are now joint owned by C&CC

I only know this as I have a sun valley 8 and have been forced to pay for 2 pitches this weekend - it seems ludicrous for a tent that is 7X4m but thats what they are saying (and after numerous phone calls I ahve to give up I think)

Oh no, we just got a 7x4 to avoid just that, we may aswell have gone and bought the huge aztec falcon if that is the case!  We have booked on a c&cc site this weekend, and told them the tent size and got the family deal, which is 2 adults and 4 children and we have only been charged for 1 pitch, so I hope that doesn't change when we get there or OH will be a very unhappy camper!

I wish they would make it clearer the size of footprint you are allowed.

Bluebella, it might be worth a call to the site or to the C&CC. It would be an interesting question to ask them given what they've published recently.

I phoned the Forest Holidays line today (which is always busy and takes ages to get through to) and the girl told me that their pitches are 8x5m. This is contrary to the Terms & Conditions on their site which show a 'unit' as 8x8m.

She didn't mention any limits based on the number of persons a tent can take, which I personally think would be open to much interpretation and therefore rather hard for them to enforce. There are quite a few '8 man' tents on the market which are (for example) 4 people in pods and a further 4 in the living area. Yes, you could fit 8 people in them but would you really?

The 2 Forest Holiday sites I have been to are pitch where you like sites, which surely are less efficient than sites with set pitches. You could therefore have a 4/6 berth tent taking up the space of an 8 berth because of the way that they have pitched, yes/no???

All the forest sites I've come across are pitch where you like sites and they are actually on the forest so there are trees and bushes scattered around so it's not quite like a 'normal site' where you are in a field shaped area.  You aren't going to have a situation where the tents are lined up x amount of metres apart.  It may be that you are pitched between bushes that are 8ms apart or trees that are 5ms apart so it is much harder to say with this kind of site.  Hope that makes sense.

I haven't camped on any of them because I live nearby but my mum camps on them a couple of times a year when she comes down. She has a caravan so uses one with no loos or showers so the rules are probably a bit more relaxed as I guess they get less busy.  Don't know about prices I'm afraid.

In terms of tent sizes most pitches tend to be rectangular so long tents such as 6x3 wouldn't be so much of a problem because the 3m bit is the important bit.  It does mean you can only pitch 1 way round  though.
