Thanks for the replies, some mixed reviews there.  So I think I will give them a miss and opt for a known maker.  I am only looking for a weekend tent thats really easy and fast to put up whilst not being too small and about 4 man size.

Me and the wife bought a tent package from Halfords for £99.  It's our first tent.   I've tried it in the garden and it was fine.  The heavens opened at 4 in the morning and it didn't stop raining for days.   Despite this the tent was dry as a bone inside. I agree that the gap under the door is maybe a bit too big and it did get a bit draughty.

The sleeping bags are just passable - warm weather only me thinks. I've just bought 2 new ones.

We are off on our first foray next weekend so will let you know how it goes.

my husband works for halfords and they do 3 diffrent makes but they get a lot of returns so for me id say they are not the best quality ! however we just brought a gelert cadiz 5 for £17 (£20 to customers ) and it is fantasic ,it huge and we have used it 3 times already. ask your local to do a product search for you ,a lot are not local and you may have a courier charge of £20 but £40 for a good tent is still a bargain !

I used to manage a Halfords store and the tents were made inTaiwan and later in China, they are rubbish and when we got one returned the supplier told us to exchange and bin the returned tent. That was a few years ago and I don't believe the quality has improved but then again they are cheap to buy..the cost of a 4 person package is about equal to the cost of b+b for a family of 4 for one night !!!!

I found this - it might help you decide .

HYDROSTATIC HEAD
a measurement of waterproofing

For any fabric to be considered fully waterproof it must be able to withstand the pressure of a column of water 1000mm high without leaking. This is classed as a hydrostatic head rating of 1000.

To measure the hydrostatic head of a fabric a column of water is pressed against it. The height of the column is increased until the water penetrates the fabric.

The term hydrostatic head is used to denote the amount of pressure of water that is required in order to penetrate a given fabric.

Some products, such as tents and jackets are by their very nature intended to protect the user from the wind, rain, snow, sun and so on. Different conditions would require different levels of protection. A mild climate with a few light showers would require the hydrostatic head to be less than if the climate was rougher with lashing rain.

The British Ministry of Defence definition for a waterproof fabric is that it must resist a column of water at least eight hundred millimetres high.

Pressure to the surface will increase the need for a higher hydrostatic head. Examples are a groundsheet in a tent is going to expect people to walk on it  Likewise, a rucksack will increase pressure to the surface of a jacket at that area.

Of course, this is compensated for in the level of hydrostatic head. As mentioned above, the MOD consider 800mm as waterproof. Most tents start around 1500 which is substantially higher.

Weather is best considered for the worst case scenario.

Here are our recommendations as to what to look for.

During a British three season period, Spring, Summer, Autumn the hydrostatic head of the tent should certainly not be less than 1000mm. Any less and water seeping in during a storm is very likely. Bear in mind also that wind-driven rain requires a higher hydrostatic head.

An hydrostatic head of 2000mm plus is going to take care of most European rain conditions in all seasons. Of course, the type of material fabric and pole structure of the tent are then going to be a further consideration.

All the tents on sale on our site should show the hydrostatic head. The majority are suitable for three season use within the UK.

The hydrostatic head for a waterproof jacket varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and from fabric and technology used. Regatta, for example have waterproof jackets with a hydrostatic head of a massive 8000 (ISOTEX 8000). The level of waterproofing depends on the requirements and design purpose of the jacket. As a rule of thumb guide an hydrostatic head of 3000 is decent waterproofing.

I am learning a lot about tents! I have camped this weekend with a Halfords Urban Escape, bought on Ebay for £32. It was great, kept us dry and was great to sit inside in the evening. The front section opens up which is really nice when you are cooking. On day three though, the wind picked up and the poles started bending inwards and one peice snapped. Oh dear. I think we will be able to repair it but I would not go camping in windy conditions with it. Wind and tents don't go together very well anyway do they?! So it was a bargain but you get what you pay for! It will be fun for a while I think but the zips and the design dont look too promising.

Hi, welcome.

I HAD a halfords tent, everytime we went camping I would either find a problem or return with one, either stitching, poles cracked, mainly problems with stitching.

I have since returned it and got my money back. Gone for a Kyham Ontario 8.

Also to the higher HH the better Halfords 1500mm the Ontario is 5000mm so bring on the rain (not), although I did pay twice as much for the new tent. (you get what you pay for)
