When we camp close to home, we tend to take the car and hubbys van (Peugeot Expert), beacuse he often has to work for the odd evening and we fit camping around that.
We have never had a problem with the sites we go to, but some we have looked at going to in the past have said 'no commercial vehicles', so we wouldnt go.
But back on topic, when we are going further we have car and trailer, which are both at busting point, and I dont think we take any unnecessary things, other people might think they are though!!!! We are careful with our packing, and make use of every little space.
But I am NOT going to buy a roof box, so just means we cannot buy anything else - well nothing big anyway! Unless its a bigger trailer!...........................humm, now theres a thought!

Hmmmmm
I'm feeling rather embarrassed now. When we first started camping it was a whim of mine.....not long after our twins were born. Ideal I thought.. pop off for odd weekends to attempt to de-stress. Theres only so much staying home changing two bums and suffering projectile voliting you can take.
So, I tarted up an old trailer I had (only tiny) and packed all the camping gear in it. Ahhh. Twin babies.......our Nissan Serena, a seven seater was full of all their gear. It was a nightmare but an enjoyable memorable one!
As they grew so did the needs of what was taken. I know I thought.....instead of filling up the car, I'll just make a bigger trailer. What a mistake. As one of our colleagues here said, if you have a bit fo space you fill it. At least I insist on keeping the car clear of stuff.
Then friends decided to join us for weekends so we took enough for them too. I found that stopping distances were increasing rapidly so this week Ive fitten brakes to the trailer too!
Wanna know something? I dont care! We take what we want and have a bloody good time. No, we dont use a lot of it but who cares. Maybe we will think about cutting back...... one day!
Sorry... what was the question again????

People using their works vehichles for camping has reminded me of something I saw a couple of years ago when camping at Riverside Swansea.
A shiny new silver grey hearse pulled in oppsite our pitch. I started looking around for film crews, I thought this had to be a wind up, candid camera , you beeen framed type of thing.
But no, it was for real!! I couldn't believe my eyse, everyone on the site was gobsmacked.
Serious, they get out and unload , pitched two big family tents, and all the gear. A bit later on, up pulls a matching funeral family mourning car, big grey limo, and the rest of the party get out. There was 2 families. fab car for loading camping gear, a hearse is.
Even undertakers use the firms car to go on holiday.
Bet you never saw anything like that ?

Heck, if folk have room and don't mind heaving tons of kit around then good on them. Each to their own. It's just not for me.
I do think newbies feel a bit overwhelmed with the amount of things they are told they might need at first, and astonished at the amount of space required. And of course some folk can't have roofboxes or trailers for various reasons. That's when they look for advice about cutting back.
It happens that for this long weekends trip Hubby needs his car to go to work and take the kids to rugby on Sunday, so we're taking both cars. So I'm going to flat down the back seats of the Mondeo estate and use it as a van..no space constraints today! Still not taking the kitchen sink though as I'll still have to deal with all the packing, unpacking and cleaning myself. If I take too much I spend so much of my time shifting it around I don't have a good time...and once anyone gets to that point of feeling overwhelmed with too much stuff, it's time to cut back. It's just that this point differs for everyone.
