Nice tent and rig Teloz! The UK tents sure look different than the ones I'm used to seeing here. The Dutch tents certainly look unique with the bell end and funky rainfly. I can certainly say that my Dutch tent is one that I have never seen around these parts. Does anyone have a guess at an approximate age for my tent? I'm guessing 70's. I will set it up again and do the water test for leaks and seem issues. My other tent that I recently bought is a J C Higgins tent sold through Sears from the late 50's. It is all canvas with a treated floor. They called it an umbrella extension tent that could sleep 5 in cots. Several bug screened windows and a bug screened door. The center pole in the tent raises up just like an umbrella with arms that extend out. Poles go from those arms to the corners of the tent. There is no rainfly. These tents were common from the teens to the 60's. It may be too big for two but, at night, a table and lamp could be set up inside for a nice cup of tea and a card game. Okay, probably a nice cold beer and a poker game with the fellas! Chris

Hi Chris

Your JC Higgins tent sounds interesting; would love to see some pictures of it.

It always amazes me how different countries have such different styles of tent available - probably to do with the varying weather conditions we experience.

I've got a De Waard tent which is a Dutch make, click here for their website.  Mine is a two person version of their Albatross tent with two side wind panels and a variable canopy.  The designs are very different to what is available in the UK.  We had to go over to Holland to buy it as they don't export them.  Most of their tents have a centre pole, so you feel a bit like you're in a circus tent.

I received a great response from De Waard about the Felisol tent:

Hello Chris,

Nice of you to think of us.

This year we are having our 60th anniversary, so lots of experience here.

Yet, no one here remembers something like HDL for a manufacturer.

Are there any details in the label ? ( I cannot read the text around the HDL logo..)

The Felisol brand is for the cotton sheet that has been used.

The tent must be (from its looks) from the 1960’s.

De Waard built similar models in those days.

Many greetings,

Mr. Pé Bouwman

I'm really into vintage stuff, so I am happy to hear the news that it's 60's! On a different note, I have a couple of picures of the J.C. Higgins tent:

I don't know if the image came through. Here's the photobucket site:

Here's another shot of the "umbrella" mechanical bit of the "umbrella tent"

I'm new to "adding photos to the text". I hope they come through!

Hi Chris

The De Waard people are great, very helpful, and very serious about their tents.

The images didn't come out in your post, but the links worked.  If you want to post a link just highlight a word in your text and then click on the little globe in the 'post reply' box, copy and paste the web address into the http box, and that's all you need to do.

The pics of your umbrella tent are fascinating.  The centre pole is literally like putting up an umbrella, never seen one like that before.

Thanks for the post link tip Tessa. Let me try a test with a picture of my vintage 1956 trailer with a canvas awning here. Here's another trailer of mine. A 1936 teardrop trailer with a canvas awning. This is the "camping under canvas" section of the forum isn't it?!! Mobile metal tents with a taste of canvas. I'll have to see why my pictures didn't post with a simple right click on the picture and paste. Adios for now. I hope the links worked!

Reminds me of the millitary tents used in the late 60's in Germany.
