Well whilst reading these posts, its got me thinking of options. Heres my train of thought.
Over a 10 yr period
Towbar fitted £150 - £200 (+ a possible change to another car after 5yrs?)
Decent trailer £300 - £400 (+spares and repairs)
Possibly £700 - £800 over 10yrs maybe more
Then you have to find somewhere to store it!!!!
Why not, everytime we go on our full week yearly camp holiday, just take both cars, adult & child in the front of each car, rear seats down. I dare say you could take whatever kit you wanted then. Plus 2bikes ontop of each car.
It would probably cost you £50 - £60 xtra on each trip.
With £800 to use with the money you save on the trailer, thats maybe about 15 trips.!!!!
With the weekend camp trips with smaller tent, probably get away with roofbox anyway.
What do you think!!!
Jings ! You are such a mind reader ! I'd been toying with the idea of a trailer, but can't (won't) justify it for exactly the reasons you state !
Anyway - from your original post, we also have an Octavia with roofbox, for 3 adults plus mutt, to transport a Sun Valley 8 plus utility tent, plus ALL the clutter necessary for a no-hardship week. I just make sure that I do the driving, as that ensures that I get a seat to myself. It all fits, but there tends to be a kit explosion at the far end when the doors and tailgate are opened.

I got a CR-V earlier in the year specifically to lug the camping stuff around and I'm very pleased with it.
I think roof boxes look naff (tho' I'm thinking of getting a roof bag) and I won't tow a trailer.
I put the Aruba (much the same tent as the Antigua but I think slightly bigger) with it's poles and other long thin stuff vertically behind the front passenger seat with crates, towels etc stacked up on the left hand rear seat behind the tent. Keeps the weight in the middle of the car and takes up only a small amount of floor area but the disavantage is you can't put a body on the seat!
Doesn't bother me, surplus people go by train or take their own cars but if you have small children that may not be an option.
Take care

Towbar incl fitting £ 120, Trailer £ 110 (second hand), Spares and spruce up of 2nd hand trailer £ 60.00 Total £ 290.00
We use the trailer for trips to the allotment / recycling depot. We don't need 2 cars as I cycle to work (30 mile round trip) so the saving of fuel, VED and insurance on a 2nd car over a period 10 years far exceeds GBP 800.00
