ahh you were replying to an earlier comment somone made about Vangus being as common as muck. They were sell out tent of 2009, so they are very common, I am sure it was just an expression :) We all knows Vangos are great, I just wondered if Gelert were also good, coz I would get a free carpet!! Lol

I don't know much about Gelert but they have been around a long time. I can only vouch for the tent I have. I was lucky, I paid £95 for my Icarus in January and have used it on 5 trips this year, and it has been great. Had some bad weather to boot, but it has stood up well. I am going camping next week in the highlands for a week and this tent is just right for us (two children, myself & my good lady). I must add that we have the canopy as well and thats makes a huge difference. For a carpet we just use picnic rugs.
We saw the Gelert Lakesbury 5 in Trago Mills on our way back from Cornwall and kept humming and haaing about buying it. OH is 6'4" and I'm just under 6' so being able to stand upright is a big thing for us. Anyway we walked away without buying it and felt we'd regretted it.
We then came across the Vango Icarus 500 and liked the fact you could attach a canopy, giving more outdoor space. I'm not sure this option is available on the Gelert (sure someone can verify this). Also the reviews on here swayed us to eventually opt for the Vango.
You mention prices are high at the mo, but it seems the more you buy, the more you save (based on individual prices). We got ours with footprint, carpet and canopy for £229.99 with free delivery from here. Ordered it on a Wednesday night and it arrived Friday morning! Also picked up an EHU from them for £39.95 and done our first camping jolly with electric a few weeks back...feel very civilised now! A kitchen is my next thing on the agenda

Tashmina, I will check out the link, thanks! I am totally getting electric for our camping, which my Mums calls cheating, but she does not have children to entertain! lol
hi starr it was an old thread and some one mentioned they got the 500 for that price. The cheapest i can find the 500, is for 127 pound on amazon by a compant called cave and crag ltd.Do you have a card membership for go outdoors, you could save some money again because they have a price match promise, they will match any price then take a further 10% off. They are selling the 500 for 139pound.
Oops, me and my big mouth!
In referring to the Icarus as being 'common as muck' I wasn't dissing it in any way. I went on to say that it is very common for good reasons. I was in fact on the verge of getting one myself but stumbled upon a Nevada M for the same price, so I got that instead. The Nevada is probably even more common than the Icarus.
It's just that I know some people like to be different and not follow the crowd, even if they end up with something slightly inferior.

its ok this icarus owner forgives you but my tent has taken your comment very personaly, and says he wont come camping unless he recieves a full apology, would appreciate it if you could asap as meant to be going away this weekend
Well, that just goes to show what thin skins those Vangos have!
But in the interest of world peace I do apologise unreservedly and hope you both have a great weekend.
thanks lancman we are suppose to be going to penrith in the lake district keeping a close eye on the weather, praying it stays semi decent, or a will have one unhappy little daughter.
Aahh, but which one? The nation awaits with baited breath.......
On a darker note, I have to announce that I am officially depressed. ...and it's all daveboy's fault!
The whole idea of buying a weekend tent was so we could just pack up and go for a couple of nights if the weekend forecast was good. After daveboy mentioned going away this weekend I thought yes, why not!
We soon got excited by the prospect and deciding where to go, but then reality hit us round the face with a wet cod fillet:
We live in Devon, schools have broken up, there has been a mass migration/invasion from the rest of the country and there is not a single pitch to be had anywhere! Even on sites charging £30 per night.
So it's hedge trimming again for me this weekend.
aww bless lancman! its the only reason we don't head south, the fact that everywhere gets booked up so quickly, you should pop up this end of the country instead, yeah i know its up north and will probably rain but we have plenty of room up here and its a little cheaper!
lancman, this is the tent gods way of punishing you for your cruel outburst towards the icarus. On a serious note, a shame you cant get away,i'm lucky i booked my trip a couple of months ago.Hope it stays dry so you can get the hedge done
lancman i see you are from devon, me and my wife visited dawlish warren when we first got together about 12 years ago,we loved the area. was thinking of visiting the area in september, any suggestions for a nice familey camp site.
Nice one Starr, I'm sure you will be pleased with it - just remember not to insult it!

Me go oop norf? Sorry, I never go anywhere I can't understand the language.
daveboy - The tent gods are smiling on me again, (no doubt appeased by my grovelling apology) and I am pleased to report that I am officially no longer depressed.
Have finally found a pitch for the weekend so we are off tomorrow. It's a tiny little place (12 pitches) in the back end of beyond so all I have to do now is find it.
Dawlish eh? Did you see the black swans? We live in Exmouth which is just over the river. Far nicer place, of course - better class of people than that Dawlish mob.
Can't recommend any Devon camp sites as tomorrow's will be the first I've actually stayed at! We've always 'gone away' for holidays i.e. out of Devon. Might be able to recommend one on Monday though.
