Is an Oztent too rich for you?

A 3-4 berth tent - RV3 or RV4 Check.
Metal poles Check.
Sewn in groundsheet (or zipable) Check.
At least 4´6´´ inner height Check.
Polycotton Check.

1 big Apsis for living, 1 smaller for storage
I'm thinking an RV-4 is bedroom + storage for 2 people, plus the front and sides gives plenty of living space.

Easy to put up alone (so most probably a tunnel even though I do not really love them)
Check.

Availability of ready made carpet would be fine but alas I do need the tent first of all!

Since it's a rectangle, getting something to fit should be trivial. I'm told a couple of overlapping 2m picnic blankets work well.

Downsides? It needs to be on a roof rack, it's heavy, and it's sodding expensive. And mine arrives tomorrow if the courier do what they're told.

Hi andycwb,

Yes, the Oztent is not my piece of cake:
- erection single-handedly seems impossible
- square form is vulnerable in one of my favourite locations: North Sea coast
- price is far too high for my budget
+ weight or size is absolutely no consideration for me: my family transport is a real campers´ car: a 3-ton Transit :-)

However, thanks for the idea, I look forward to your test pitch and experiences.
Hope you will be happy with your purchase, mine should arrive within the next days, too.
TNT NL seems horridly slow...

The tent I finally selected (see my last post here) is a kind of smaller size, lower material specs, higher level of outfit Lavvu:
The Montain Creek Tipi 340 LW , an out of production bargain from Stassar NL.
Fits my idea like this:
    * A 3-4 berth tent Yes, probably even 5 could fit!
    * Metal poles 32mm steel, one pole only: easily erected and tank-like
    * Sewn in groundsheet (or zipable)The only point that is unclear: groundsheet definitely is included. Looks like sewn to inner tent.
    * At least 4´6´´ inner height Even more but only in middle due to triangular crossection (the big Lavvu drawback).
    * Polycotton (or rugged plastic with good ventilation)Polyester ripstop 3000mm is rugged!
    * 1 big Apsis for living, 1 smaller for storage No! One vast room only (bug-safe inner tent), plan to use an organizer and a lamp holder on the pole to create a visual separation.
    * Easy to put up alone (so most probably a tunnel even though I do not really love them)8 pegs, 1 pole, that´s it (minimum style erection)
    * Availability of ready made carpet would be fine but alas I do need the tent first of all!Nope. But ordered cheap Mountain Creek footprint (to be cut to shape) and plan to add a 2/3 interior floor cover.

I will post a report on the test pitch as soon as possible.
Oh those waiting days...

regards,
Jan

I guess if the shape and price are concerns for you, then it's not going to work, but just to fill in......

It arrived yesterday, and the base tent was up in the claimed 30 seconds from opening the bag, plus a couple of minutes to stake out. I didn't fully assemble the extras apart from checking everything went together and all the zips worked. I'm thinking 15-20 minutes to pitch completely including front, sides, and fly. It most certainly can be done on your own - that was one of my requirements since at least 50% of my camping is solo.

I will aim to pitch it more fully when I have a bit more time over the weekend as I want to give it a good soaking to make sure the seams are all waterproof.

Hoping you'll be as happy with your choice as I hope to be with mine.

Hello to all,

After a while I can report on the result of my search:

Stassar´s Mountain Creek Tipi 340 LW

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/tents/preview.asp?id=2166

Upon arrival I shortly did pitch with 10 out of 38 pegs only ;-) and found:

Positive

The groundsheet is sewn in: fine!

There is a double door on the inner tent, one in mesh, one in inner tent fabric, both with center and bottom zippers: super!

The fabric of inner and outer tent is ripstop structure: good.

Size and shape is very fine: standing height at center, lots of space.

The steel pole has a rubber bottom plate.

Negative:

The nylon groundsheet is a little fragile. No problem since footprint and carpet will follow.

The top cap was missing!

No mesh cover is installed at the top of the inner tent. Needs to be added indicidually.

No pitching instruction whatsoever included.

So I did call Stassar and received the missing top cap within a few days.

To find it has 12 lines on it. For the use on a 10-sided tent. Without instruction…

My requests for clarification remained unanswered…

Since those 12 lines were loose at the lower end I added some rubber straps with hooks and spanners to allow easy and flexible attaching.

The missing mesh cover on the inner tent top was added by a local tent factory.

This took a while (over no-work season in winter) and was not executed as bespoke.

But it works and my reclamation did result in me receiving some fine pegs for compensation.

Next step was a complete pitch in March with all pegs in place and the carpet (Aerotex) being cut to shape.

All worked fine.

Found a non-sealed part of groundsheet which lacked the second row of stitching. So I glued and sealed with Sealnet.

Easter holiday saw the first use of the tent:

After pitching in Grandma´s garden nearly all family that attended chose to have a midday slumber in there: 5 adults, 2 kids! Gives some idea on the size!

The following 2 nights my son and me did sleep in the tent, the third night just me.

Experienced a real comfortable stay with lots of space.

Found a seam filler band being loose on a small stretch but that is optical defect only.

Especially ingenious is the arrangement of

inner peg (inner tent / groundsheet) – strap with spanner - outer tent – strap with spanner to outer peg

This enables a good positioning and tightening of the fabric.

All in all my modified Mountain Creek 340 LW was a little tinkering (nice winter project though) but I am pleased with the result.

The low price does result in some rectifications required and some unusual arrangements require a little experience but when completed the space / ease of handling / overall cost is as I wished.

I guess there are little competitors for a less than half hour erection by one, 4-5 berths, double walled tent at EUR 440- incl. carpet etc.

regards,

Jan

This would work if you still like the idea and want to upgrade.

Bit pricey but would last for years.

Hi Eldorado, hi scamp,

The dutch pyramid tents (would choose a holtcamper Utopia XS) are fantastic and the scandinavian lavvus / tipis, too.
But for just some days a year with the kids they are far too expensive for me.
The MC Tipi 340 LW has the same functional properties now but with ´normal, camping grade´ material: steel pole, 3000mm polyester flysheet, etc.
So that´s the compromise that works for me since I do want that nice double wall, I do want a sewn in groundsheet, I do want that triple door.
And all this I now have for one third the cost!
Might be interesting to others, too.

with best regards,
Jan

By the way:
Who did improve my layout?
Had some problems with pictures, too. Wasn´t able to upload more than 3...

Hi CAMPdiplING,

I agree the Tentipis are far too expensive for just camping with the kids, it would be a crime to use the tent for this. To justify the cost you really do need to push the tent to its limits or as you say, buy a cheaper tent and save a fortune.

Hi scamp,

Hate to disappoint you but there are no delers at all: Mountain Creek is corporate make to Stassar in southern NL and seems only available from them.
I ordered via internet / credit card and the delivery arrived by courier within a week or so.
That missing topcap even within 3 days after phoning.
But on the (twice) inquiry on how to fit that topcap no answer at all.
Normal to good retailer practice I would say...

By the way:
There is a confession I have to make:
As you might have guessed from my language I am not british!

Furthermore this tent needs to be on the cheap side for me because it is secondary equipment only:
Summer holidays and whole family stays take place with Missus (who will not sleep in a tent anymore but did during that Easter midday break :-) )in one of those tiny 1.3 ton caravans...

Yours,
CAMPdiplING
