Unfortunately the weather definately did not permit. We wont be able to pitch properly due to the size of the garden but I at least was hoping to zip on the groundsheet and put the poles in to check the canvas. Never mind always next weekend.
The main reason we chose the Palamos was because of the flexibility of the moveable wall, and I see what you mean about the weight of the ZIG. The quality of the canvas looks great and the colour of the tent is much better than I was expecting from the website.

Just a quick question: if the front wall can be used in the forward position, surely you then lose the benefit of the ZIG (or does it have an additional, zip on piece of groundsheet?)?

If you use the wall in the forward position, the part of the ZIG that would have been attached to the wall has clips in each corner that alow it to drop i.e. lay flat on the ground. They supply another groundsheet for the porch area which can be placed over the dropped edge of the ZIG thus preventing a tripping hazard.

When the wall is in the back position all 4 sides are fully "ZIGGED".24

Yes you do lose some of the ZIG benefit (only on the front) when the front wall is forward, but I think it is a very small price to pay fot the additional flexibility the moveable wall provides. Are you thinking of buying one?

Finally managed to get mine out the bag and zip on the canvas. It was nice and large and can't wait to use it. Plan on using it in March so will make full use of the wall in the back position so I can keep the inside warm and use the porch for cooking.

I also felt that loosing the ZIG on one wall only was a small price to pay for the flexibility. I will have to get some extra bags though as there was no way I could get it all back in the bag lol.

We've had a Cabanon Bella Vista and a Cabanon Laguna, frame tents which both have the moveable front wall facility. I just wondered how it would work with a ZIG tent. Does the front wall panel have a storm flap, which you can tuck under the groundsheet when used in the forward position?

The front wall has a generous storm flap (which I am hoping won't be tested too much in 2011).

I thought that zipping on the groundsheet would be a chore given the weight of the canvas but it was very easy as the back of the ZIG and the canvas have colour coded zips so you can easily align them. I will take as many photos as possible first outing as the Obelink website is a bit lacking on decent photos for anyone interested in this particular tent.

I'm a relative noob at camping. Bought a Palamos 6 this year to replace an aged Khyam. Used it once so far and love it. Just wondering how I can protect the underside of the ZIG from sharp stones and twigs and stuff. Is there a special sheet or footprint that anyone could recommend for the Palamos?

Welcome

Best thing to do in my humble opinion is to buy a cheap tarpaulin from an supplier eg B&Q, then cut it to size of a little less than the ZIG plus the extra sheet. This can be pegged out square and then the tent can be unpacked and the corners pegged out to the new footprint corners. Gives a square pitch and works beautifully for my Eldorado. Cost about £7.

good luck

I bought a cheap 3m x 5m as an additional groundsheet to protect the groundsheet for my Escala 4, the smaller version of the Palamos 6.

Width wise it is just about right, however, I would prefer it to be slightly narrower by about 5cm to minimise the risk of water ingress between the groundsheets.

Lengthwise is a bit too long. Although it would provide comfort underfoot when I am in the porch area, I am concern about potential water ingress between the groundsheets if it rains heavily.

Therefore, I may fold it back so that it does not stick out beyond the tent's groundsheet in the front.

I think it would be worth having a think about this issue in practical terms and ask the question 'what's the worst that can happen?'.

First remember that the tent groundsheet is waterproof and will not therefore allow water from below into the tent, particularly if it is of the bath tub variety. If it is a flat sheet and you were camped in a stream, water could run in from the high side and then hopefully out from the low side. So don't camp in a stream or very wet area with a flat sheet

By the same token a footprint that allows water in at one side will allow it out at the other. The bathtub ground sheet on top will be unaffected as it is waterproof but will remain clean because of the protection of the footprint and that is what we use it for

So where's the problem? Well if you are unfortunate enough to pitch you tent on a hollow, water flowing over the footprint will collect at the lowest point then floating the groundsheet above it. This can be mildly annoying if it is half and inch but a couple of inches would be a pain. However if you were pitched on a hollow where the water would not drain you would be in the same boat (sorry ).

So the moral would be to choose your pitch with common sense, make sure you are not on a 'sump' and it is likely all will be well whether your footprint is slightly oversize or not. At least your precious groundsheet will be protected as will your tent when erecting and packing away

A last thought, if the footprint is a little oversize just make sure that the excess protruding part is to the low side of your pitch

John,

In theory, the additional groundsheet being slightly over-sized should not matter unless I pitch in a ditch.

However, if it does rain heavily, then potentially there could be water between the two groundsheets, which could make packing them away a messier job.

That's where I am coming from.

Bobach,

The Palamos 6 allegedly should be back in stock in December according to another thread. It may be worth contacting Obelink to register your interest for this tent, so that they can contact you when they have stock.

I bought my Palamos back in May, along with the obelink cotton tarp. They didn't seem to have any stock shortages then, perhaps I was lucky. Guess they will now be stocking up ready for Spring so hopefully they will have more in stock soon for those waiting to get their hands on one.
