oh dear you live and learn hey! this seller seems to be selling a lot of them. all those poor buyers buying something that may not be safe , damn you ebay!!
As others have said the one you brought is not safe to use on camp site in damp. It has no rcd on it and I've heard of some site not letting people use them. As I said last night you need to spend around £40 on one to get safety that's needed with electricity. Don't want anybody have a shock from one of those cheap one's. Better safe than sorry. You may get good bargain on ebay, gumtree or preloved if somebody's selling a second hand one. Good look on finding a bargain.
Well done for asking the question before using the one have.
What I do is either send it back or if you can't the chop the blue plug off and put normal plug and use it around the home.
think im going to burn the thing lol. joking! ive definately got the message now though and will stop looking at it with an evil look in my eye! hehe!
another thing thats now puzzling me..oh yes another is...
we have bought a lovely camping stove with 2 burners, ive read that butane is nicer to burn so im ok with that. i also know i need to get a pipe and regulator thingy. the only thing im puzzling on is how much gas to get? we arent exactly going to be doing tons of cooking, as we have a barbecue too. but just to make cuppas, toast, bit of brekkie that kinda thing. so over 10 days what is your guess (anyone of you lovely people that can help me would be great) i dont want to buy a huge canister if i dont need to.
once all these boring practicalities are out the way im going to go back to dreaming about bunting and solar lights. oh yes i am!!!!!

The smallest Calor cylinder is 4.5kg - dimensions and weight are shown here (you may be able to avoid some, or all, of the deposit by sourcing a cylinder elsewhere), but if that's too big/heavy and/or you intend camping on the Continent, you could use a Campingaz 907 - a bit smaller and lighter, containing less gas for more money! (Again, there is a charge for the original cylinder, but they are available from other places).
Regulators are specific to the cylinder ie the two mentioned are not interchangeable.
We have the 4.5kg calor one, and we were told to realistically expect it to last for a 2week trip with moderate usage. However, friends of ours get two 1-week trips and several long weekends a season out of one, and just get it filled before the first tripof the season. We have only used it once so far, for 3 nighs, so i cant speak for personal experience yet. We have been advised to take our single burner that just runs on a tin, in case it runs out mid-trip. Can finish making brews then, before heading off to get it refilled :)

Our calor(4.5kg) tend lasts around 40 nights. That's brews and one or two meals a day. Don't worry about it running out mid meal. Just weigh the bottle before a trip the and that give you an idea how much is left. The metal tag around the bottles neck tells what the bottle weighs empty.
thanks nigel. you are all so helpful! i cant believe we havent done camping before. we cant wait. luckily we are in devon already so have loads of lovely sites within an hour to cornwall or even closer. so we are going to have a weekend trial run!when the weather decides to behave.
ive bought a clip on light bulk from a camping shop. im going to set it up with a low watt bulb. its going to clip onto our pole!is anyone going to smack my wrists for this purchase!
hi all. i have a question. i have been looking into getting another ehu lead and the campsite in france says 25m is the size i need, my question is. all the leads i have seen have only one plug hole. and if i want to use more than one appliance at a time . ie light and kettle. how can i go about this? is there another extension i can get to plug into the main one? can i use a normal home one? all the 25m only have one plug hole. cheers all x

If it's any consolation, you're not the first to ask about a 25m unit!
Domestic extensions aren't really recommended in a potentially damp tent environment, but if it's a question between light and kettle, you'll probably be taking a battery torch/lantern/headlamp anyway which you could use while the kettle's on, or something like the "UFO" led lights which have become popular in recent years.
I'd query the site's advice though, ask if a 25m lead is really essential.
oh lol its not a new question then! i did see that post but didnt really get an answer from it. hehe.
i might be able to get away with the 20m in france. i have just emailed them!
im sure i will be back!!
Don't stress about camping in France! They are more geared up for camping across the channel and many of us choose to go over there regularly because we find it to be a better experience than UK camping. This thread will give some opinions. Check the Camping and Caravanning Abroad forum for loads of advice! Plymouth / Roscoff is my favourite crossing as it gives such a relaxed start to a holiday. A bit more expensive than some but, travelling from Devon to Brittany, it saves a lot of time and driving (particularly as I don't drive a quick modern car!)
Electricity - most EHUs seem to come with 20m cable. This one is on offer at Go Outdoors at present. My EHU only came with a 15m lead and this has usually been enough but I also now take one of these to use as an extension for times when longer is needed. (I have modified my EHU to be able to use either / or / both ... paying attention to ensuring that connections are as waterproof as possible). It would be a good idea to get an adaptor as not all French sites use the 3-pin connector. I am not an electrician but I have no problem in connecting an internal extension to my mains unit believing it to benefit from the same RCD/MCB protection.
Gas - Calor is the gas of choice for many as it is so much cheaper. Calor, however, is only available in the UK so if taking it to the mainland ensure that you have sufficient. I use 2 x Campingaz 907 cylinders which are widely available as exchanges all over Europe and at a good price in most French supermarkets. Empty cylinders can often be obtained 2nd hand or from recycling centres to save on the initial purchase price.
hi mart thanks for the advice. we are actually venturing to our 1st trip tomorrow, to looe in cornwall so only an hour away! perfect! we are in fact going with brittany ferry from plymouth as also very close. so it was a no brainer really! we bought a hook up lead from halfords in the end its a great one. with a red light that goes off if the poliarity is incorrect whatever the heck that means! hehe! the same one on amaazon was £89 i think and this one was £40 so result!!
cheers again
