I've only offered help (to pitch) twice....
The first time was to a group of two couples sharing one of those large vis-a-vis Go tents. It was clearly brand new.... as were they!! I did little, physically, other than to show them how to get the flexi poles into the ring and pins... and not to be scared of bending them. The tip to partially open doors and windows to help it fill up with air went down particularly well! :-) I "had" to go back and advise on peg angle, and the fact that it would be a good idea to actually put them more than an inch into the ground... Oh, and to lend them my mallet, as it seemed a tad more practical than their half-ounce one, that probably cost them the equivalent of a half-eaten lettuce leaf... and was about as effective!!
I kind of got the impression I was beginning to grate, by that stage, so I left 'em to it!!
The second offer of help? They politely refused, and subsequently proved more than adept at coping themselves....but they did then need to borrow our bottle opener!!
A little "off topic", as neither of my "targets" were solo campers, but whilst folk continue to be polite, I'm more than happy to offer to help, (and not be offended if my offer is refused) but I sometimes fear it's a fine line between helping and interfering!! I get the impression there's an art to getting that first approach just right, to avoid the illusion of being "Mr Busybody"!!
