I remember being told by my Father " never touch a canvas tent when its wet because it will leak".
If anything is touching the tent on the inside while it's raining, it will wick water through the canvas into the tent. It won't affect the waterproof qualities of the canvas or its future performance - it just creates a route for the water to run in. After an experience with a wet bed I now make sure everything is pulled clear of the sides of the tent in the rain. On that particular occasion the problem was actually a strong wind which blew the side of the tent inwards until it was touching the bed which would otherwise have been far enough away.
