However you achieve it, slightly smaller - so it doesn't channel water twixt groundsheet and footprint. Shouldn't be any need to seal seams on a new synthetic tent. IMHO.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

the footprint listed is 545cm x 410cm. I could buy a groundsheet 5mx4m from here:

http://www.tarpaulinsdirect.co.uk/camping/groundsheets/topgrade-tarpaulin

or should I just use a basic 110gsm tarp.

ok will have a look. if its too small does it need to be in one piece, eg can I use 2 to make a big enough tarp? and if it too big can I cut it down?

you don't need a footprint! they are only sold to extract yet more cash out of you, the only thing they do is help to keep the bottom of the tent floor cleaner, which can be easily achieved with an old cloth rung out in a bucket of water and then the cloth gets dumped in the bin

Well, personally we love our footprint. It allows you to determine where best to pitch your tent and means that the bottom of your tent is clean and more importantly dry which if you have a large tent really speeds up packing up time and gives peace of mind.

2000 hh would be the minimim, not the 1500 hh. New tents shouldn't need sealant applied or proofing prior to use.
You can find some fab cheap tents, I had a Vango 4 berth tunnel tent with fibreglass poles around the £120 mark, that was about 16 years ago. Did not have any problems at all, it stood up to every type of weather. Not one pole broke, no leaks I had the tent for about 6/7 years constant use right through the year, in every half term. Made sure it was dry before storing.   I now have an Outwell, it stood up to those high winds which Morecome Bay can throw, plus I had the tent pitched in the wrong direction huh, side on, not a pole snapped, then I did have the side doors open to relieve the pressure.
I use tarpaulin, if it's bigger, just tuck it under and I cut it in two, for easier handling. I use it to keep the underside of tent clean, makes life easier and for added protection. It's always advised to check the area before pitching for sharp stones or objects.
Happy camping
