And poster Alan in this thread says Outwell told him not to use fly spray in the tent :

Which brings me back to my question; in that case why don’t Outwell and other manufacturers TELL people this in maintenance instructions?

I can assure you I do not spray fly spray under my arms although in really hot weather it might be a good idea

To be honest, I have yet to see or hear any actual evidence that spraying aerosols inside a tent damages the tent. On the outside, without doubt detergents will wash off the water repellent and I suppose fly sprays may do also but there is nothing on the inside of a tent other than the material itself which is a polyurethane waterproofing laminate. Is there any actual evidence that sprays damage polyurethane? If there is, you need to be careful using it at home as well because lots of things are made of polyurethane...varnishes, paints, mattresses, sofas, even roller blade wheels.

I have seen various aerosols damage paintwork, when a concentrated amount drips down. And many contain solvents.

I don’t use aerosols anyway, but with advice from Outwell and an Aussie fire officer, as well as an obsessive vigilance in not getting any unnecessary substances on my tents, I would err on the side of caution here.

Why spray a flammable substance on to a highly flammable plastic tent? Or a less flammable cotton one.
But then again, as (I understand) Deborah says...why use an aerosol for anything?

Because it kills flies inside a tent, maybe? Polyester tents are usually flame retardant anyway although I wouldn't want to be inside one if it caught fire.

One doesn't spray fly spray onto the tent material...one generally sprays lightly (very lightly in the confines of a tent) into the air, which is where the flies are flying. The flies drop down because fly spray usually paralyses the fly's muscles believe it or not and they basically die of a heart attack...I read that somewhere

It is of course up to the individual if they want to spray or not but speak to anyone who uses fly spray (and there were one or two in the old link that Deborah posted) and they will say their tents have never come to any harm. I have yet to hear from anyone (and this subject has come up many times before) who has used fly spray and their tents have disintegrated or started to leak.

Rumours abound but there doesn't seem to be any actual evidence.
