we too have had both kinds and i must say i prefer outer first.  We had fun and games  throwing the outer tent over the inner, one gust of wind and we're para gliding!  Our sunncampe is lovely and we've never had a flood.

The SIG has many advantages, and if you are careful you can make sure that there are no bugs get in.  You only need to loom at the number of them between the inner and outer when you pack up to see that it is worth it for that alone.  It is also fab for the kids as it is much warmer in cold nights.  The biggest advantage for us however is that the dig can sleep in the lioving area without being able to escape to the outside world whenever it choses.  Oh, and no badgers, hedgehogs, rats or mice etc can come in to your house.

We love ours, and there is plenty ventilation if you need it, through windows vents, back and front door etc.

Or you could have the best of both worlds, where the inner and outer stay attached and are erected as one, and it has a SIG, but if its stuffy on a hot day you just uncover a few vents. What a pity the tent I am talking about isn't big enough for a family of 5.

We had a six berth khyam meggadome about eight years ago that had the bedroom already attached when errected and a SIG it was a good tent but sadly the knee joints started to break so we upgraded to the Gelert Lunar 6, that is an outer first and also a nice tent but draughty even though it had mudflaps. So now we have just bought the Diablo 900 and are looking forward to evenings without blankets around legs or hot water bottles on laps.

Many thanks for all the replies! I just got a chance to check today.

I definately need a SIG - I had an outer first (the dreaded Ullswater which I took back coz it leaked) and the bug problem was horrendous (Scotland - W. Coast).t

I must look at the montana - SIG with outer first - didn't know about that one.

Cheers Everyone!!

I always put the outer's up first that way you can leave the inners dry in the car, same with doing the ground sheet.

Think the Vango Aurora also is flysheet first, but has a SIG.
