I went camping this weekend and was very cold in the night and have decided that from now on, I'm taking duvets as well (dont know where they'll fit in the car but I'll get them in somehow).

I`m in the same minority too. Even in the TT I preferred a square sleeping bag because it sealed you up against the draughts. I had one of the caravan cotton covered ones for the TT though, as the TT is cosier than a tent.

For tent camping I think my current Astral 350 is perfect....and, of course, with a sleeping bag you don`t have to bother as much with layers of mats and spare duvets and fleece blankets under and over the airbed. Less things to carry and set up, less space needed in the car. The sleeping bag is usually enough, with the possible addition of a fleece blanket in freezing weather.

I absolutely agree. I have tried a mummy-style bag and it was  confining and I didn't get on with it all. But I now have a very generously sized, very warm and comfy square sleeping bag and it is the bees knees. Does the  job all on its own without any need for a trailerful of add-ons. Lovely.

Its a question of  finding the right sleeping bag for your needs. Buy one that's too big or too small, too warm or too cold and you just won't be happy. MT

Depends on the weather - just spent 3 nights under canvas in Yorkshire and wouldn't have traded my sleeping bag in for anything - approached freezing on one windy night!

But when we go to France in the Summer, duvets are the order of the day - sometimes they're too warm.

My advice is to err on the side of safety. You can always unzip.
