Rubber mallet for most uses, steel hammer for rock pegs, though personally, if I couldn't use my nylon Delta pegs I'd find a different pitch!

We also use a metal lumphammer. Had wooden and rubber and prefer the metal one.

Please - no hammers !   Nylon or wooden mallets are fine for stainless and nylon pegs.

Rob

Hi Dave, rubber mallets are not a problem.

Nylon Delta pegs already have a tiny amount of rubber in them for resilience. With wooden or nylon mallets there seems to be less bounce.
Stainless steel pegs shouldn't be hit with steel hammers because of the burrs that can be created over time. (It would take a long, long time but what with H+S etc).

Thanks Rob

Having just ordered both types from you it is a relief to know I already have the right mallet - and don't need H+S goggles

Well I have read all the posts and wonder if those who prefer rubber or wood have tried a steel lump hammer. After all, you don't have to give it an almighty thwack.
All I can say is that on a number of sites I have watched people trying to hammer in pegs with rubber or wood to no avail, I have strolled over with my steel hammer and given the peg a few taps and in it went. they all said that they would buy one.
Another point is that many pegs come with pathetic thin pegs that bend, the first job is to replace them with something sturdy. Not all site have nice soft loam onder the grass. Some are very stony indeed.
