It is often the case that seeing tents for real just helps you see what is right for you. The free windbreak is a good offer too!
As far as doing a DIY tension band system, the problem I can see is that you need some way of attaching the bands to the inside of the tent on the seam where the poles are running externally. The attachment needs to be firm as it will be under tension. On the poles where your inner tents toggle up you could possibly just use the toggling points, though it may put more strain on them than they are intended to take.
There is also the problem of the poles across the living area, which may not have pre-existing attachment points to use. Glueing is not a good idea because of the risk of affecting the waterproofing. If you stitch it you will need to tape the stitching over and use some seam sealant too.
