Hi. I'm about to buy a tent and need some advice on what to go with. Basically I have £250 to spend but could spend a bit more if I have to. I need at least a 7 berth tent with SIG and I'd like some windows to let the light in. Also want something easy enough to put up with the flysheet going up first so we can dive in if necessary!

I'm a real novice at this so I'd really appreciate any advice and recommendations.

Hi, with 5 children I think you need to be looking for a 9-10 berth rather than a 7 berth. Have a look at wildday they have some good offers on last years models in the 9 - 12 man section. A tunnel style is easier to erect than a dome with seperate pods coming off the living area. All bedrooms will have the sewn in groundsheets, but you may find it harder to get the full sewn in groundsheet in the living area for your budget. Before you buy anything you must go to see some on display and see how different tents compare, you may find that you like the feel of a particular style tent once you see it in the flesh.

Thanks for the link. I do like the tunnel style and keep looking at the Outwell Montana XL but don't know if I can justify the money!

We have a sunncamp vario 900 which is a nine berth, but in reality is an eight berth. It's a tunnel tent and has lots of windows to let in light. It's a pitch as one with full SIG and is a great size tent that's not difficult to put up. There have been problems with leaks on the zips on some 2006 models, but I expect sunncamp will have rectified this for this year. Might be worth a look as a comparison to others, although I think this exceeds your budget too.

Another option might be the wild country halo 104, 10 berth. We have the 7 berth as a weekend tent and while the living area isn't as huge as the vario, the porch is a great addition. The 104 is a bigger model and the 2006 model is retailing at £250 with World of Camping. This is a sturdier tent than the vario as it has steel frames, but it is heavy and does not pack small. The wild country range don't have much of a write up on here as not many seem to have them but I think they're a good tent for the money. We camped in February and March in it, with rain and some wind, and it remained sturdy and watertight.

Happy hunting!

Would suggest the Khyam we have, easily sleeps 7.  We got ours for £199 from the caravan and kite centre website, but others have it at similar or close prices.
