Hi,
I bought Montana 12 at the end of last year and have recently become aware of the many threads on here about problems with poles. Can anybody tell me what the exact problem has been??! I've heard about the new colour poles and the acid test of weighing the poles, but I'd really like to be sure that I've got the right poles! Mine are a silver-goldy colour, which worried me when I first saw the threads about the replacement poles being green/brown, but then I weighed them and they cam in at 20KG. Now I'm confused!!
When I put the tent up for the first time recently I was wary of any pole problems, and the only difficulty I had was in getting them apart again when taking the tent down - it took quite a twist. The alloy pole for the proch also seemed to be a little too long - I got it in the cups, but they pressed against the tent sides rather too much for my liking.
Any advice anyone can offer would be very gratefully received.
Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay,  there was a problem with poles in 2005 and they were replaced with brown ones.  The 2006 poles are silver-goldy colour so your poles are fine.

There was lots of talk last year about the porch pole being too long.  You will find differences of opinion.  Our retailer thinks it's fine and we've left ours.  Others have shortened their porch pole.  The only trouble with this is if you needed to take the tent back it might cause a problem.  I suppose if you're worried you could buy a spare pole and cut it to the length you feel happy with and use that instead, leaving the original pole untouched.

Hope this helps!

PS, it can be tricky sometimes to pull the poles apart.  If so, give them a knock with your mallet.

Thanks Michelle - you've put my mind at resst! I think I'll do what you suggest and buy a replacement porch pole and shorten it myself.

Thanks again!

Jay

Hi

I spoke with mr outwell and he said if people wish to shorten the porch pole they can and it will not affect the warranty.

Regards

We took our Montana 12 away to Cornwall last week, which we bought in early June last year . It was its second time out and had been properly pegged out fully using the heavy duty pegs. No leaks, alas the poles could not stand up to the weather on Monday (The worst was on Sunday apparently). We went out to get some food and on returning to the tent we found that two of the rear poles had completerly collapsed, bending in the middle, leaving the rear of the tent flat and a tear in the porch door where the porch pole had broken, and torn off pole clips.

Luckily there was a fellow camper with the 2 spare poles for his Montana 6, which we could borrow for 24 houirs until he went home. It meant curtailing our holiday but took the tent back to the supplier, broken poles and photos in hand. All we got was we will look into it and speak to Outwell, and kept our tent for a period unknown as yet, as he couldnt deal with it then. He claimed he had never seen a pole collapse before and there was no known problem with any Outwell poles..

As I pointed out the upright poles on the 2006 version do not join well with the roof poles thus allowing the roof poles to be loose and lean to one side, and jam. This in turn puts extra pressure on the upright poles which I believe contributed towards the collapse, broken poles, aqnd damaged canvas.

Has any one else had this problem?? as we were made to feel guilty.

Phillifish,
