Thanks B Chrystie. Sounds good advice especially as I will be arriving fairly late on the Friday and the last thing I will want is a marathon session putting up the tent with tired and hungry kids in the background!
Have a packed tea ready in the car. (possibly with lots of 'treats' that needs opening and unwrapping - occupational therapy for kids and a good time filler!) There is no way you are going to feel like cooking anything when you arrive. You will be tired just with organising the the trip away and the drive, let alone putting up the tent. These things always take longer than you think and tired, hungry kids can go into 'sabotage mode' very quickly if they think they don't have your undivided attention!!!
The tent may go up very easily, but it's all the other bits and pieces that take for ever to set up, including finding all the kitchen stuff so forget all about that till the morning. In fact for the morning, why not freeze a 1 pint carton of milk before you go, get some individual cartons of orange juice, and some individual packets of cereal (supermarket own brand are a fraction of the cost of Kellogs). Put it all in an easily accessible box somewhere. If the kids are hungry in the morning before you're up and organised, they can help themselves. To save on washing up they can always pour the milk directly onto the cereal in the wax paper bag in the carton, and then eat it with a disposable spoon (part of the camping fun).
Not sure how long you're planning to be away for, but I have always had a routine where the kids make their own packed lunch each day immediately after breakfast. They have their own sealable plastic bag, and it all goes into a cooler bag when its done. If we're out for the day, then the picnic is already packed. If we're staying on site for the day the kids can come back to the tent and 'graze' whenever they are peckish, without me having stop what I'm doing to sort out endless snacks (It's my holiday too you know!).
Above all have fun!!
