Hi Everyone,

I have been looking to buy a tent within the next week or two. Having been and looked at a few I have narrowed it down to a tunnel design; namely either the Vango Oregon 800 or the Khyam Ontario 8. It is because they are so similar that I have a question:

Does anyone have any information that might make one a better choice than the other? If you own one what made you select it over the other?

We are a family of four and are happy that the size gives us an acceptable amount of space, they cost about the same, have similar features and are both from respected brands.

Your help/thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

sounds like i am doing the same research as you -

I like the Vango because it is lighter, has lifetime guarantee and the TBS system

the Khyam has a much higher HH and a sun canopy

now to confuse you, have you looked athe the Gelert Alaska 8 tent this has a good HH and has 2x2 sleeping system.

please let me know when you have made you decision

The oregon.  We had the same choice and went with Vango because it felt nicer and was much lighter inside.

I haven't looked at the Gelert Alaska, but I will now.

At present I think the Khyam is scoring a bit higher than the Vango.  I will be working away virtually all of next week and so the final decision won't be until then.

One of the pro/cons for the Vango, dependant on how you use it was the canopy at one end.  I would not use it becasue of needing the sleeping areas at both ends.  From what I understand, when the canopy is down, it is not sealed and could be draughty.

Khyam produce a dedicated sun canopy for the Ontarios, although this or others may fit the Oregon.  I wouln't expect to use the sun canopy evertime, but for more than a couple of days I probably would.

I am interested to know how the door arrangements compare, specifically at the bottom.  I have seen the kansas (Ontario) and realise it zips both sides and rolls up, whereas the Ontario zips along the top and side and rolls sideways. I don't know what it does along the bottom (loose, velcro, zip?).  Any problems with draughts?

Thanks

The oregon is not draughty as it has toggles for you to peg the SIG into the flysheet.  We went away last weekend in the rain and wind and it was fab and nice and toasty.  The TBS system keeps it grounded and protects in high winds whereas i would trust the Ontario.  Horses for courses i suppose.
