Hi, we have been thinking about buying a tent for a while and have finally decided to take the plunge. We have looked at the Vango Diablo 900 XP at £320.00 and think it looks great - could anybody with a bit more experience of camping give us any advice or recommendations? Thanks very much!

Why have you chosen the Diablo, we have a 2005 Diablo and now with experience consider it not to be one of our best buys. It is inner pitch first which when raining can be a pain. It is difficult to raise the flysheet over the dome especilly in windy weather. The bedroom pods are half height so you have to crawl to get into them, and finally the configuration means that in the case of our 900 the floorplan is very large. However on the plus side if you have considered all these factors, the Vango quality is very good. Dont get me wrong I like Vango's and I think the Breckenridge 6 would be our next choice but the large dome is not for us.

Thanks for the advice. We are going to "Go-Outdoors" on Saturday which I believe has lots of tents on show, so will have a good look in there and ask for some advice!!
As it's all so new to us, we don't really know what we are looking for but do know that we want a 'SIG', at least three bedrooms, large living area and canopy - there are only four of us (2 adults, 2 kids) and a dog, but don't want to be too cramped and then be put off camping for life!
We are looking for out first tent too and have been looking at the DIablo 900 XP too.
I read somewhere on the interweb (sic) that apparently there are at least two versions the 2006 that has issues with the way the poles are put in and can cause tearing leading to leaks (my mothers old colander would be better option) or the 2007 which has addressed the issue apparently. I read somewhere else on this forum that it can sometimes be difficult getting a pitch for larger tents.

Hi pcp+h, which Go store are thinking of going to. There are few Vango's at the Coventry store and they seem to have rather more Outwells, a few Colemans and some gelerts and others. I wanted to find a Breckenridge 6 which has three full height good double bedrooms, a small porch , full SIG and is tunnel style. Sadly they dont stock this tent. I now have a Montana 6 which more suits our needs for a family of 5 although it only has 2 3 berth bedrooms. This is why I like the look of the Vango Breckenridge as it really is a Monty 6 with 3 good double bedrooms.

The old Diablo did have a problem with the bedroom pods in that they suffered with sagging. We have pitched our 2005 Diablo a number of times and have never been able to get all three bedrooms to hang properly to the extent that you could never get 3 people in the pods. Vango have now put an extra support pole in the 2007 Diablo XP which I believe has remedied this problem but for me the head height of the bedroom pods is still an issue. We bought our Diablo because of the huge amount of space in the living area, but in hindsight I think there is no more usable area than in our Monty6.

Yes, I am now seriously considering the bedroom height, we originally went to our local Outdoor World store and they had the Diablo 600 XP which (being a complete novice!!) I thought was lovely and cosy - I'm now wondering if it would drive us mad having to crawl into the bedroom!
We are going to Go Outdoors in Stockport, Manchester on Saturday - I'm going to go with an open mind and see if there's anything else there. Had decided that we wanted the three bedrooms as pods - separate -in case we take the kid's friends, in-laws etc. but not sure now??
Another point, I've read somewhere that people wanted the tent to be very light (to stop them feeling claustrophobic) - but have been told by others that the bedrooms (at least) should be dark - otherwise, no sleep!! Any opinion on that anybody???
Thanks again

I have used both last years 900 and this years 900XP lots of times and there are some real improvements in this years model. The extra poles in the bedrooms are a revelation - proper height (not that you need loads) and also slightly bigger, so that you can fit a double lilo lengthways (feet/heads towards the centre) which gives more room and also gives more options sleeping on a sloping pitch. The new bedrooms make the tent feel even bigger, and there are (I think) 6 pockets in each bedroom for bits n bobs. It also seems to pitch more easily (changes to the sleeves maybe?) and the bathtub groundsheet in the porch actually fits and works! One of the biggest advantages is that the extra bedroom poles (and therefore extra guying points) seem to provide a much more wind-resistant structure. I saw my 2006 model collapse bedroom first and watched the guys on the bedroom remain tight as it collapsed. Hard to explain that one, but the way it was designed allowed the single bedroom poles to bend and fall in towards the dome in an arc with the guy as the radius, if you get my meaning??

Oh...and the third bedroom is really useful for storing all your 'stuff'. We remove the roof box and put it in the third bedroom to use to keep our bags, cycle helmets, suitcase etc in. And the diablo is a light tent, and can get warm in the morning (all synthetics do to some extent) so either pitch for a shadow in the morning, or don't expect to lie in!

my advice is to buy one (second hand if poss) we did, been away in it three times each time its rained ,most recently two weeks ago...so you can imagine how much it did rain !,never leaked once, bedrooms are a bit saggy at the back (old model) groundsheet could be a bit thicker, sloping front door falls inwards when wet meaning lots of mopping up,so buy the porch extension, it would be worth it. life time guarentee, quality of tent, and aftersales service all plus points
Hi, thanks all. We ended up buying a Diablo 900 XP and went away in it last weekend - rained solidly all weekend! Tent was great, no leaks at all, so we're very happy with it! Lots of room in the bedrooms and in the living area - we did buy a gazebo as well though, so spent lots of time under that to save the tent getting wrecked by the kids! Thanks again everybody!
