thanks for the replies , i have only put the tent up once and that was without putting the back bedroom up as my garden is not big enough , i would like to pitch it and leave it up for a few days but as my garden is not suitable i can't as i don't have any time off work to pitch elsewhere at the moment , thanks for the response though and i do feel better after reading replies from fellow hartford owners and others , regards ;)

we have been using a hartford xl for 3 years now, never a leak, its a super tent, and bank holiday weekend in cornwall it withstood some terrible wind and rain for 3 days, no problems at all.
Same for us we have a hartford xl never had a leak it stood up to heavy rain and strong winds in May when many other tents on the site were flattened (mainly tunnel tents) and at the moment would not swap it for any other.
Yes there were a lot of problems with the 2006 models and still the 2007 models. But I have not heard ANY bad posts regarding the Hartford range. I used to have one my self a few years ago when they first came out and it was totally reliable. The Hartfords are a completely different design to the Nebraskas and Vermonts which is where the majority of problems lie at the moment. The design of the Hartford has not changed much so they cold not really have introduced any new problems. Of course there may be the odd faulty one in other models but generally the Hartford range has been bullet proof.
If it does leak then do not try and repair it with seam sealant unless the dealer tells you too and agrees to replace it after the fact. Although they supply you with a repair kit and seam sealant this is really for later on in its life not whilst it is in warranty. The Outwell tents are tape sealed and seam sealant should not be neccessary until that tape starts to go. If it leaks ( no matter how small ) then take it back as most small leaks will turn into big ones later on. Whilst it has a warranty use that warranty.
I have had lots of bad Outwell tents over the past 2 seasons but I don't think I would worry if I had tha Hartford.

hello mate i have an outwell indiana 8 you will get the odd leak the first time you use it thisis untill the waterproofing becomes intact with the fabric , i recomend you put tent up at home and then soak with hose pipe for at least a half hour this will solve the problem before your venture. also rub vasoline on the outer stiching this prevents zips leaking good luck
Nooooooo!
Sorry to contradict you, but it is surely not a good idea to rub vasoline on a tent! Petroleum jelly will damage the waterproofing - don't do it!
Also, whilst cotton canvas tents need to be weathered (ie wet and then allowed to dry) before first use, to seal the fabric (the cotton fibres swell and little holes subsequently close up and make it waterproof), this is not the case with synthetics. If it leaks, I'd say take it back!

Totally agree. Vasaline will not do the tent anygood. If you need to repair a tent use seam sealant or Fabsil to re-waterproof. The Indiana 8 is a synthetic tent and should NOT leak straight out of the bag. If it does return it without applying any repairs to it at all.

I went camping this weekend as the most wonderful birthday surprise (!) in my new Outwell Hartford L (also a surprise!) and it despite the weather's best efforts it didnt leak at all! And as for the space in them I cannot recommend them enough! Absolutely perfect tent love it love it love it!
I have to agree with some of the other members, I've had my Hartford XL for over a year now without any problems. We last went camping during the horrendous Bank Holiday weekend in May and didn't have any leaks at all. The tent stood up to all the gales no problem. I love this tent and hope you enjoy yours too!
Hello all. Our family of 2+2 went camping first time last year in a little tent from Tesco...was FAB!! Went near G Yarmouth in August during floods, and our cheap, basic tent did us proud. Having enjoyed it we decided to go again but we need a tent with good living area. We have booked to go camping in August (same week...??!!) but as yet cannot decide on a tent! We are torn between the Outwells Hartford L and Indiana 4 or 6. (Also like the Vango Vail 500!) Having read the comments re the Hartfor L it sounds great BUT we are both tall and are concerned about the size of bedrooms. The Indiana appeals as it seems very light and airy with SIG (a must) and the zip-off canopy makes it under the 21' limit at some sites. We thought we'd go for a 6 berth (3+3) to give room for luggage within bedrooms leaving the living area for living! Want to put table and stools/chairs inside. Hartford XL is bigger than we want (over 21') but will the Hartford L have enough room for luggage in the living area ASWELL as table etc and still feel comfortable and light and open? We think we prefer the Indiana 6 and ALMOST ordered one this evening BUT concerned now having read these that it may a/ leak b/ blow over! The Indiana seems to be a better use of space whereas the Hartford seems to be more sturdy...I'm sorry to have written an essay, but we have a family occasion this w/e and really had hoped to have one by now...PLEASE HELP!!! Any feedback from owners or those in the know would be very gratefully received, thanks.
I don't think I've seen any reports of dodgy Indianas either this year or last year.
It's not a full SIG though it's a bathtub - which personally I think is better - so if SIG is important to you in this shape of tent you need to look at the Montana

Dont worry about the Hartford XL... Myself and other Member "NobbyLear" both have had these up in some pretty bad weather.....No Leeks...Dont worry, you dont need to with the harford XL...my advice is go ang buy the canopy for the frount if you need a bit of sheltered seating/cooking space... Click on my Gallery Image to see what it all looks like up....That weekend saw two full on thunderstorms ,one whilst we were pitching and the other on the seconed nite...with some haevy showers during the days ....no worries..
get out there and stop worrying ...
Happy Camping
OutWard
As you know might know its an inner pitching first tent so try and pitch it in the dry weather ...Also buy the footprint ground sheet..this will stop ya main groundsheet getting muddy, and helps to insulate the tent from the cold ground £30.00ish well spent
So it's great in bad weather...once it's UP??? Thanks for your comments on the Hartford XL...like the pic Outward. Anyone know about the Indiana 6 vs Hartford L re living space, stability etc?
