Hi, need some advice please. We're going to SW France (stopping in a mobile) and need to stop overnight on way down and back. Have stayed in hotels/b&bs before but want to cut costs this time as there are 6 of us, 3 adults, 3 children. By the time you've paid hotel, found somewhere to eat you're talking a lot of money. Would we be better to buy a small 6 man easily erected tent and camp on route? I really fancy this option cos at least you have lots of fresh air after the drive rather than being couped up in hot hotel room, with children wanting to run riot to expel energy. Could anyone help with a) is this a good idea!? and b) any ideas for cheap tents. We don't want to bring our family one as it takes up too much room and too much time to erect. Also any problems I may have forgotten in my rush to try and save some pennies! Failing this any recommendations for logis de france hotels or b&bs near Orleans would be good. Thanks

how about the pop up tents, alot less space in your car. Have you thought that you will still have to eat out unless you take more camping stuff with you.

Just looking at pop up tents now actually, would need 2 x 3man. Thanks for reminding me we'll need to eat, knew I'd forget something!!! Kids will be happy with chips from campsite and we could bring our little gas thing and have some pasta. To be honest we'll be that knackered having got up at 2am to travel to Dover and then travelling 300-400 miles from Calais we'll probably fall asleep before we eat!! Save loads of money!
I always stop at Formule1 motels (hotelformule1.com) They are very cheap but always clean and easily accessible. Some are directly on the main motorways but there are also many in small towns just off the busy routes. The website is easy to choose and book from, I've booked 2 rooms each sleeping 3 for 58Euros (total cost) in August.

That's really good price. Do you get breakfast at formule1's? Do you find it easy to eat when you arrive, cos we usually spend ovr £100 on meal 4 six as we're never sure where to eat and have a seriously fussy daughter who generally only eats pizza or pasta or chips, which greatly limits where we eat! Also an 80 yr old mum who is a champion 'fly spotter' and refuses to eat anywhere she spots one!! Apart from that she's a gem.
WARNING a three man tent is only big enough for two check size before you buy

I think brekkie was extra but it wasn't that bad, about 3 or 4 euro each. Just find a decent boulangerie in the local village though and buy some milk or make a flask of coffee, job done!

I have just bought a couple of 2 man tents for the same reason. They are currently up in the boys rooms. Cost £10 each from Lidl but Tesco do a similar one for £15. I would consider space with a pop up as they are at least 80cm diameter which is quite large when you look at it.
I also stayed in Formule 1 last year. Cheap. Bonsai are good too as are most of the motels at the road side. Can't remember which it was that we found that didn't have an en suite but had shared facilities which I was iffy about until I saw them - they were fab. Immediately after use they powerwashed themselves so they were very clean and much bigger than the loo and shower in the room. Cost about £35 for the 4 of us although we had a 3-man room with 2 midgets in it. Have a look on activehotels.com for ideas. I've booked a couple en route to Nimes this year but am now wondering about the tents instead. If you arrive at a half decent campsite they should have food and many have pizzas for difficult kids. If not why not look for a hypermarket at lunchtime and have a hot lunch and buy snack food for later. Hypermarket restaurants are good and cheap. Or what about Flunch?
Have fun.
