.

There doesn't seem to be any competition between sellers.

Even when prices have been so called reduced from rrp they are all the same give or take a couple of quid, very odd.

Maybe if this weather carries on there might be some movement, it must be putting a lot of people off buying.

I disagree, end of season prices will be lower, but if you hunt around and are prepared to buy last seasons tents - there are bargains to be had.

What are you after maybe someone will help you find the cheapest price?

Obviously end of season stuff is going to be cheaper I'm talking about the current market. As for shopping around I based this thread on the fact i've been shopping around.

eg montana 6,everyone has it on sale for £325 reduced from £420 give or take a few quid how can that be

I know. It looks like price-fixing. But isn't that against the law?

O.k. fair enough a popular tent like the Montana might be hard too track down cheap, may be you might have to console yourself with a freebie included in the price?

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.allweathers.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=790

Price fixing? Probably.  That link is for a free storage unit.  World of Camping recently did an offer with a free Coolbox.

http://www.outdoorworld.org.uk/outwell-montana-tent-free-carpet-p-1027.html

Here is one with a free carpet.  They are only worth buying if you require them I guess.   If you don't want the free item sell them off on Ebay, pocket the money a consider it a saving.

As for the weather making a difference, I am not sure.  I think camping is probably becoming more popular as people try to reduce there carbon footprint.   In april the news was full of stories of campsites seeing massive increases in bookings, is this set to continue?  Lets not forget you could also purchase the tent from Penrose Outdoor for £379, maybe it is just easy to get a good price.

The carpet is worth £60.  Maybe £40 on ebay?

Hi

I hope you dont mind getting a retailers point of view on this one.

Re price fixing, well if that was the case we would make more than we do on these tents. The margins have come down and down over the last few years so there comes a point where retailers like myself cannot go any lower.

Its so easy now for a customer to find a price on the web now so we retailers end up checking all the prices and in the end the price levels out at the lowest price we can live with re the profit margin.

Re the Outwell Montana 6 price at around £330. If a retailer thought it was worth stocking and selling it at £300 they would as they would get all the sales but by the time you have displayed one, sent one to a customer for free as most people like, spent time talking to the customer etc it just wouldnt be worth it.

There is no secret cartel or price fixing in the camping trade, most retailers only talk to 2 or 3 other retailers anyway.

Regards

Gary cross

Hello Gary,

Sorry, but know you have entered the discussion I have noticed that you at cross camping have a free offer on.  An Outwell tent over £250 with a free windbreak (excluding Bearlake).  I don't know if you can do anything about it but the free offers I had previously mentioned came up on a google search for 'outwell montana 6 free' unfortunately I did not see cross camping come up.

Regards

Elegant Mess

yes thats the one, try it and you will see some offers.  I hope this might help you, maybe it is of limited use to you, but when searching thats what I try and I can't be the only one.

I note that Gary hasn't pointed out what the percentage markup is on a tent, to give "the lowest price we can live with re the profit margin".

Sorry to sound very cynical, but I was gobsmacked when I found out.   Hence the Rage tent....

Tony the retailers have to make a living to be able to carry on trading, just like why  you and me go out to work. Im not in the trade but they only make a very small profit on each tent, not enough to live on.

The google free offers is more than likely a sponsored search thing.

Good to see a retailer answer your question. Well done Gary for putting the retailers point over.

So Tony what is the mark up on the tents as you were told the retailer makes? Im sure we are all very curious here.

Hello Rickit et al,

Googling for 'outwell montana 6 free' does not appear to be a sponsored search result.  It is just a search technique.  Try it.  You may have to wade through 15 pages of results, this search did provide two on the first page though.

Hello

Just brought the Montana 6 with carpet from Camping World at Frensham. Asked for the footprint to be thrown in for free and it was. Just shows that if you ask you sometimes get!

Not as good as the free carpet, but still a good offer and great service.

Looking forward to some good weather to try all the kit out, will be our first camping experience.
