Hi Liz & welcome to the forum
Would you consider a second-hand canvas frame tent? There are quite a few on ebay at the moment, and you can't really go wrong with a frame tent. 6 berth frame tents usually have a 4 berth inner with divider & a separate 2 berth inner. 5 berth frame tents are usually a 3 berth & a 2 berth inner - I'm sure your 8 year old would be okay in the 2 berth inner on his/her own.
With the weather we're having this summer a frame tent would be ideal, as you can cook inside & there's plenty of room for the children to play if it's raining. Also you don't get a condensation problem with canvas like you do with synthetic tents.
The only downside to a canvas frame tent is that it takes up more space in the car than the modern synthetic tents, but much more comfortable to use.
If you search for 'frame tent' on ebay, you should manage to find one for less than £100. Beware of the ebay specials. Go for a used tent by a good manufacturer, eg. Cabanon, Raclet, Trigano, Marechal, Easycamp, Sunncamp, Lichfield etc.
