Hi

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids (8 & 4).

We are looking to buy our first family tent and would like some recommendations, advise on things to look out for etc. please.

Looking for one that isn't too expensive, but has a reasonable internal height (husband is 6'2").

Also also I have seen some pitches have a hook up, what do you need to buy to use these? Would be handy so kids could watch a DVD in the evenings!

Thanks

Hi there,

There's so many tents to choose from so its best to work out a budget first. Would you only use it for long holidays or for short breaks too? For four of you, you'll need a 6-8 berth. Then you need to think about whether you want a contained tent with a sewn in groundsheet (keeps kids in and bugs out) or one with a ground sheet that's seperate or can be zipped out (good for hotter climates). As you mentioned, you're tall so you need good height in living area but also bedroom length.

As for reccommendations, you'll get loads on here as we all think our tents are the mutts nutts lol. Mine is, of course, (well, two of them are) but may not be what you're looking for. Tunnel tents, like the sunncamp varios, give good head height throughout and are easy to pitch. My favourite tent, the wild country halo, is a really sturdy, weatherproof tent (been out in it since feb in torrential rain & wind etc. not moved an inch) but doesn't have full height in the bedrooms. (Although this isn't an issue for us as you tend to spend most of your time laying down in the bedrooms, unless you're a sentry). I love my halo tent because it hasn't let me down in the bad weather, unlike my vario which bends in the wind thanks to its x-flex poles!!

If you give some idea of budget, use, etc, then people can advise you better. Best to go for a tent with a HH (hydrostatic head) of at least 3000. As for EHU (electric hook up) it does make life easier. Make sure you get a proper one from camping shop so that its safe. Its a lead with RCD and plugs on end.

Good luck with your search!

Thanks for that.

We were thinking of spending upto about £150 on the tent, maybe a little more if needed.

It would mainly be for short breaks, if we get on well we may then think about spending a week away in it. However long we go for it would be in the UK.

Sewn in groundsheet, sounds best for us as kids absolutley hate bugs!

The Wynnster Corvus 8 Tent as per link from magnolia looks good. Any brands better than others, or any brands to avoid?!

Hello

You could try the Khyam Ontario which has a SIG and plenty of height.  Outwell oregon is really nice but no SIG but the mudflap thingies on the outside fit that snug to the ground I doubt if many bugs could get in.

Try going to tent exhibitions as one tent will just have that feeling (you can always ask on here if you have any queries about it).  Hope that helps.

That Blacks tent looks good for 2 but if a whole family had to stay cooped up inside because of the weather then it could be a bit of a tight fit.

I too don't like creepy crawlys and in all our camping expeditions we have never had anything crawling inside our tent. Now flying thingies get in anyway they can

Any of the big names are as good as one another -
