Hope someone can help me!

I want to upgrade my Vango Venture 500 to a slightly larger (but quick and easy to pitch) tent to accomodate our increasing family size - now me, OH and 2 kids (1 & 5). I didn't realise there was so much choice until I started looking a few weeks ago and I have more or less decided I would like a tunnel, either a Wynnster Peregrine 6 or a Vango Oregon (600 or 800) because I need around 195-200cm headroom for my husband who is 6ft tall and they are bigger (but not massive) than the VV500. I don't have much knowledge of tunnels but I gather they can be less stable than a dome. The Vango seems to have a system to stabilise it but can't see anything for the Wynnster.

I actually fancy the Wynnster Peregrine in terms of  size and layout but am worried it is going to blow over in the wind! Can anyone put my mind at rest or is the Oregon the safer bet?

Thanks for your help

Sally

Hi Sally H,

A lot of tunnels like the Wynnster Kestrel have storm poles that fits along the side of the tent above any side doors.  This gives extra stability to the tent, but not the Oregon.  The TBS system is a Removeable strap that goes from the Apex of the hooped poles to a point at the either side of the same pole (half way up) forming a supporting triangle. The Storm pole system gives support to the length of the tent, TBS to the sides.

Tents with stormpoles are not  the Vis-a-vis kind you are looking at, rather they have multiple poles of the same length, with sleeping compartments next to each other.  These tents often have the ability to zip out the front door panel and move it to the next pole back, providing an outdoor covered seating area while maintaining an indoor area.  Vangos equivalent is the Vail 500.

Back to your original choice, The Vango Oregon 600 has 11mm Fibregalss poles, I think the 800 had 12.7mm poles, If the Peregrine has 12,7mm durawrap poles I really would not worry about it, they are used in much bigger tents.

I hope that helps.

Hi Sally

We have an Oregon 600 and used it for the first time during the weekend of 30 June/1 July with all the severe weather going on.  We used the TBS banding system and the tent withstood the storms fine - yes it moved in the wind but I'm pretty sure that's common for most tents anyway.

HTH and please feel free to shout with any more questions about the Oregon range

Clare

Another vote here for the Oregon. We have the 600 and I`m a fraction under 6ft tall and its fine for me. I was also very surprised at how stable it is too and with the TBS it really is rock solid. If there are 4 of you though , I think you should be looking at the 800 rather that the 600.

Isn't this site just great!

Thanks for the info, everyone. I think I am going to see if there are any bargains to be had at the end of August. I like the sound of the the Oregon 800 but to be honest it is a little more expensive than the £150 budget I had set myself.

I have also just seen a post extolling the virtues of the Coleman Columbus 8 and the ease of erection (I previously excluded it as being too big but l know is only £134 in GoOutdoors) so I might just change my mind totally........!
