After having a brief affair with a Bear Lake 6 - loved it, loved it, but too heavy for me to lug/too big for the car with our kit, so sold it last weekend. Am now trying to decide between the SV6 and the Monty6 and as they are so similar, it seems to come down to whether you want fibreglass or steel poles... can anyone offer any advice/suggestions please?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Fiona

There was a topic on similar question I think last week. The Vermont L is similar to the 2 in question. If you're worried about weight, you won't want steel poles. So that leaves you with the SV6. I thought the Bear Lake would have had lighter poles than the the Monty but not sure. We started off with the Nebraska XXL and the poles for that weighed a ton, could barely lift them. We now have the Vermont L and can lift the pole bag but still heavy.

We bought a utility trailer to haul our gear in instead of weighing our car down and find that we can open up all the poles, lay them across the trailer and pitch. Pole bag never leaves the trailer and we never have to pick them up. Loads easier.

I've rambled a bit there. If I had those 2 choices, I would go for the Monty, I like the sturdiness of steel poles on a long tent. If you compare the Monty to the Vermont L, the Vermont L has a huge enclosed porch with the added feature of unzipping the front and having a nice wide canopy. I also believe that the Monty canopy will fit the Vermont L giving you more outdoor space if needed.

Blacks is having a very big sale at the moment and totalcamping.co.uk will probably match their price. I have dealt with total camping through some problems with our nebraska xxl and they have taken care of us 120%.

Best wishes

Thanks Mama Bear, for such an informative and speedy response!  Have just checked your Vermont L - what a whopper it is!  We are being a bit greedy with a 6, as there are only 3 of us, but like the space and the idea of friends joining our son in the future.  Will check out prices on Blacks and totalcamping.

Cheers!

Welcome to UKCS Fiona!

I broke numerous pole sections on our Sun Valley 8, so when we were replacing it OH was adamant that we should get steels poles. Saying that we did like this tent, and it would be my preference to the Montana as it has the porch space.

If there is only 3 of you then look at the Vermont M (4 berth), which is what we decided on for 4 of us (we do have a kitchen tent aswell for extra storage space). A great price in Blacks at £349, £30 cheaper than we paid just a few weeks ago.

You could always get a pup tent when your sons friends join you (if they're old enough)

Plus, the footprint and carpet are on sale at half price at the moment as well. Highly recommend the footprint, makes for a better surface, protects the ground sheet, and keeps it clean. We camped up north during the last storm that came through and the tent was all clean and we actually had to peel the footprint off the ground, the mud just suctioned it to the ground. Just hosed it off when we got home.
