I'm not sure if they're a good idea - because they would be good for cutting out drafts but removeable for cleaning and replaceable if damaged - or a bit risky because if any of the teeth on the zip go wonky then presumeably that could be the whole tent kyboshed.

Got one and saw it for the first time yesterday. I was worried about having to pitch the tent very precisely or the groundsheet wouldnt zip all the way round. In the end we had quite a bit of leeway.
It looks good but not trying it for real until our hols on Sat. Will give more feedback then, I am a bit worried about the zip breaking. It seems study and Royal say that all parts can be replaced and have a year guarantee.
I like not having a groundsheet in the tent most of the time so like the idea of being able to zip a groundsheet in and out BUT the tents that I have seen with ZIG don't have proper mudflaps so you can't really leave them with the gs out in case it rains.
Plus I am unsure about the longevity of a zip, plus, if the ground is icky are you going to end up with mud and crud in the zip? Does that mean you will have to put a gs underneath the ZIG which seems to defeat all of the point of a ZIG!
I think it's a nice idea and I do love the idea of being able to transform a tent from a SIG (of sorts) to a non SIG but, for me, without decent mudflaps it's not a go'er.

Who's got one, tried one, seen one?

Hi MT
Have you seen the ones in the Cabanon Biscays

With a relatively bulky tent such as the Outwell Lake tents and the Cabanon Biscaya it would be really difficult to pack the tent up if it had a SIG so hence the ZIG is a good option.
If I was going to use the tent with no GS in the living area I would leave it zipped in place around the bedrooms and roll it back to the front of the bedrooms. Otherwise the bedrooms would get wet. The pitching video for the Bear Lake on the Outwell site shows this.
The zip isn't that likely to get mud in it as it's ~4inches off the ground. I do use a tarp under ours so I don't end up dropping the flysheet into mud when we pack up.
