Just back from a weekend in Scarborough where we used our LV6 for the first time. The tent didn't budge in some pretty strong winds which was pleasing but the wind was blowing in as we didn't get the tent flush to the ground. Also had some trouble opening and closing the front door so used the side entrance.

Any ideas on where we went wrong?

I have noticed on the LV6 that they do not pitch flush to the ground so i think its a design thing - as to your front door move the poles in a little and then your door should work ok my friend has similar tent and if her poles are to far apart it puts tension on the tent door.

hope this helps a little

We had the same problem with our LV6.

My Original Thread

The End Wall/Door was tight and hard to zip closed. It was nothing to do with the poles being to far apart or the guy ropes being too tight.

The End wall was shrinking. It got worse from one day to the next. The zip failed on ours and the shop we bought it from gave us a full refund. We're now purchased a Outwell Indiana 6 and are going on our first trip with in next week.

Had the same problems with my LV5.  Kitten seems to be right in saying the tent not reaching the ground being a design thing.  when I first pitched my tent I thought the gap at the bottom was due to me not pitching it correctly, but since then I have seen one pitched in a tent shop, and that one was about 4 inches off the ground. The shop owner said that was the way they were made.  I cant understand the reason for this as it does cause a bit of a draught even when the mud flaps are pegged down.

I solved the problem of the front door not zipping closed by loosening the front side guy ropes and shuffling the poles inwards. Unfortunately after a few camps, the zip broke and I am expecting a replacement tent tomorrow.

I have got/had the same problem with my LV6.  The truth is I don't like the tent, but I got a good deal on it and I think the worst is over.  The trick is to loosen the straps for the pole pins right off and then tighten them just enough to hold the shape of the tent (take any wrinkles out).  Don't overtighten the guys at that section, don't overtighten the horizontal stormpoles, and experiment how far out you peg the guys out.

The experience has put me off this type of tunnel tent.  That said despite the (IMHO) poor quality of the stitching and this grumble, it has withstood more wind tham I care to camp in again, and masses of driving rain, with not a sign of a leak (It took me and the other half two plus hours to set it up that time, due to the ferocity of the wind.  She is a petite 5'3" and she nearly took off, I have been there since but the wind was not as great ).

I still find that I don't experience tightness in the zip in the day, but when the flysheet cools it can be a little tight.  Mine is hear to stay, it has had 4 weekends away and is about to go on it's second week this year.  If it breaks, I will fight the good fight (try to claim it on warranty) and chalk it up to experience.  In the meantime it provides a large living area, I have a free canopy and windbreak, and I don't have to go through the aggravation of choosing another tent.

If you like it stick with it, if not take it back.

I just remembered, the next time you pitch check how big the loop is were the guys are tied around the poles.  I felt the loop was too small and there was a potential to wear on the flysheet, as the guys had to go around the tent poles.  The simple solution is to undo them and reattach with a larger loop.  This might make more sense when you see it..

There has been many threads concerning the Gelert tunnels and a search will reveal answers to all the questions above plus many more (especially the door problems).

Just a quick tip, 'The pole in the hole' method:
If the ground is very uneven and parts of the tent don't touch the ground then simply make an indentation in the ground to lower the pole and therefore bring the tent skirt down to the ground.

Just remember to make good the indentation/hole when you take the tent down - use a tent peg to loosen the area concerned and flatten it with a mallet.
