We went to a busy camping venue last weekend and we were very anxious that we wouldn't have room to pitch our Vermont L.
The flysheet came in very handy - we quickly got that spread out on the ground to mark out "our space" before anyone else tried to squeeze in!

The rain will only get between the tarp and the SIG if some of the tarp is sticking out beyond the edge of the tent, that is why it is so important to tuck it all in under the tent.

The footprint groundsheet for our Oregon 800 is a lot sturdier than a tarp and makes a big difference to how the tent feels underfoot. Its makes less rustling noise too. We're glad that we bought one,

We were in France for a couple of weeks and noticed that a lot of Dutch campers put very thin clear plastic under their ground sheets - the type of plastic that is used by companies to wrap up clothes etc. At the end of their hols they just throw it away (ok not good for the env but it might be biodegradable - before some you shout!). Sounds like a good idea to me - but I have not seen this type of plastic available here - would certainly save on cleaning...
I use plastic decorating dust sheets under my groundsheet.then throw away...saves having to clean the groundsheet every time, can just throw the groundsheet over the banister to air and dry completely!! It doesn't stop the groundsheet getting wet, however, it prevents it getting muddy and dirty!! a real time saver that my dad told me about years ago!!

i'd never heard of a "footprint" before i joined this site, i saw the term mentioned a few places here and there on the site and it got me curious, so i searched and found this thread, it may not seem much to some (those "in the know") but to me it's been a REVELATION
now off to search for a footprint for my Coleman epsilon2 (if there is a custom made one avaliable????) or to make my own from a cheap tarp
thank you all!
